What is an XR engineer?

XR Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement extended reality (XR) experiences, which include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) applications. They blend expertise in software engineering, 3D modeling, and user experience design to create immersive digital environments for various industries such as gaming, education, healthcare, and enterprise solutions. XR Engineers work with a range of tools and platforms to build interactive simulations and applications that bridge the physical and digital worlds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an XR engineer?

To thrive as an XR Engineer, you need strong skills in computer programming (C#, C++, or JavaScript), 3D mathematics, and a background in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in XR development platforms such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and familiarity with AR/VR hardware and SDKs, are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help XR Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and create user-friendly immersive experiences. These skills are crucial for developing high-quality XR applications that meet user needs and advance interactive technology.

How do XR engineers typically collaborate with designers and product managers during the development of immersive experiences?

XR Engineers frequently work in cross-functional teams, partnering closely with designers to translate creative concepts into interactive XR environments, and with product managers to align technical implementation with user needs and project goals. Regular stand-up meetings, design reviews, and prototyping sessions are common, allowing engineers to provide technical guidance on feasibility and performance optimization. This collaborative approach ensures that the final experience is both visually compelling and functionally robust, while meeting project deadlines and requirements. Strong communication skills and adaptability are key in this highly interactive and iterative work environment.

Job description

About Rivet
Rivet is an American company building integrated task systems - fusing hardened hardware with software, sensors, AI, and networking - for industrial workforces and defense personnel. We create capabilities that multiply the effectiveness of every individual and withstand the world's toughest environments.
We serve the people who build, operate, maintain, and defend our way of life. From technicians and engineers to first responders and service members, they embody the hard work, ingenuity, and meritocratic values that drive Western prosperity. Yet too often they are forced to rely on outdated tools that fail under modern pressures. Rivet exists to reset that priority.
At Rivet, you'll join a mission-driven team that fuses disciplines to deliver decisive outcomes where they matter most. Whether shaping our technology, strengthening our partnerships, or building our culture, every role here contributes to equipping the front lines with the modern systems they deserve.
Work Authorization Requirement: Due to the nature of our business and compliance with federal regulations, all candidates must be a "U.S. Person". Upon hire, you will be required to provide documentation verifying your status as a U.S. Citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a protected individual under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
Summary
Join Rivet's XR team in our Bellevue office for 20-40 hours per week, helping build the tools and infrastructure that power our XR applications. You'll build, operate, and maintain our XR application testing and demonstration capabilities, working hands-on across hardware and software. This is a highly practical role for someone excited to work at the intersection of XR technology, engineering, and real-world applications.
Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the XR testing station used to evaluate AR glasses, applications, and experiences across real-world objects and use cases.
  • Build and run test scenarios that simulate frontline environments, capturing performance, usability, and reliability data.
  • Set up and troubleshoot XR hardware and software, including AR glasses, tracking systems, test fixtures, and supporting applications.
  • Develop and maintain demonstration experiences that showcase Rivet's XR capabilities to customers, partners, and internal teams.

Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and able to work 20-40 hours per week in our Bellevue, WA office.
  • U.S. Person eligible to work on Rivet's programs and technology.
  • Strong interest in AR/XR platforms, applications, and emerging human-computer interfaces.
  • Hands-on, highly technical, and comfortable building, testing, troubleshooting, and operating hardware and software systems.

Compensation may vary within the posted range based on relevant experience, skills, education, and other job-related factors. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for equity and other forms of compensation. Eligible employees also receive a competitive benefits package, including unlimited PTO.
Rivet is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to any characteristic protected by applicable law. Certain roles may require U.S. Person status, security clearance eligibility, or other requirements imposed by law or government contract.
