What is an XR engineer?

XR Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement extended reality (XR) experiences, which include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) applications. They blend expertise in software engineering, 3D modeling, and user experience design to create immersive digital environments for various industries such as gaming, education, healthcare, and enterprise solutions. XR Engineers work with a range of tools and platforms to build interactive simulations and applications that bridge the physical and digital worlds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an XR engineer?

To thrive as an XR Engineer, you need strong skills in computer programming (C#, C++, or JavaScript), 3D mathematics, and a background in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in XR development platforms such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and familiarity with AR/VR hardware and SDKs, are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication help XR Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and create user-friendly immersive experiences. These skills are crucial for developing high-quality XR applications that meet user needs and advance interactive technology.

How do XR engineers typically collaborate with designers and product managers during the development of immersive experiences?

XR Engineers frequently work in cross-functional teams, partnering closely with designers to translate creative concepts into interactive XR environments, and with product managers to align technical implementation with user needs and project goals. Regular stand-up meetings, design reviews, and prototyping sessions are common, allowing engineers to provide technical guidance on feasibility and performance optimization. This collaborative approach ensures that the final experience is both visually compelling and functionally robust, while meeting project deadlines and requirements. Strong communication skills and adaptability are key in this highly interactive and iterative work environment.

At Unity, we are passionate about the creative avenues that AR glasses and VR headsets bring to our developers. We are investing heavily in these futures, from integrating third party hardware to developing mechanisms to allow developers to easily take advantage of these new platforms.

We're looking for a Software Engineer to join the XR Core team to participate in developing the foundational support to use XR devices with the Unity Engine. This role directly involves you with partners that are eager to see their platforms running experiences powered by Unity.

While working in a multidisciplinary group environment, you will be provided opportunities to learn and grow as a software engineer. If making all things XR related reach their full potential drives your professional career path, Unity should be the next stop!

  • Working with new and existing hardware platforms to deliver a consistent development experience to our users
  • Ensuring quality by investigating reported issues, participating in code reviews and participating in ongoing meetings for project planning, status meetings, and QA updates. Writing automated tests around new or existing functionality; coordinating with embedded QA to establish standard methodologies, investigation of issues, and quality of code written

What we're looking for

  • AR/VR/XR experience
  • C/C++ development experience
  • C# development experience
  • 3D Math proficiency
  • A willingness to use AI software code generation to accelerate your work while ensuring you know our software architecture to ensure the code you submit is the right solution

You might also have

  • Prior development experience with Android, Windows or other platform-level software development using various native SDKs.
  • Experience using Unity or similar game engines
  • A passion for future technologies
