An X-Ray Inspector examines materials, products, or structures using X-ray technology to identify defects, inconsistencies, or foreign objects. They work in industries like manufacturing, aviation, and security to ensure safety and quality standards are met. Inspectors interpret X-ray images, document findings, and may collaborate with engineers or quality control teams. Strong attention to detail and knowledge of radiographic inspection techniques are essential for this role.
To thrive as an X Ray Inspector, you need a solid knowledge of radiographic testing techniques, quality standards, and relevant safety protocols, usually supported by vocational training or certification in nondestructive testing (NDT). Familiarity with X-ray imaging equipment, digital imaging software, and industry certifications such as ASNT Level I or II are typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication help X Ray Inspectors excel in their inspections and reporting. These skills ensure accurate defect detection, regulatory compliance, and safe operation in manufacturing or industrial environments.
X Ray Inspectors commonly work in manufacturing plants, construction sites, or laboratories, depending on the industry and materials they are inspecting. They may operate independently or as part of a quality assurance or nondestructive testing (NDT) team, collaborating closely with engineers, production staff, and safety personnel. Daily responsibilities often include preparing testing equipment, conducting inspections, analyzing images, and documenting results in detailed reports. This role may involve shift work or travel to various job sites, offering variety and exposure to different projects. Teamwork and good communication are important, as X Ray Inspectors often provide critical input that influences production and safety decisions.

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities. This Pipe & GTAW (TIG) Welder position is supporting a new advanced hardware program at Blue Origin. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced welders and manufacturing engineers to perform manual GTAW welding operations on aerospace-grade materials under direct supervision. This is a hands-on, learn-by-doing role in an early-phase manufacturing environment - you will develop your welding skills on hardware while building the foundational knowledge needed to advance as a welder.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performing manual GTAW (TIG) welding operations on aerospace components under the direction of senior welders, following approved weld procedure specifications (WPS) and detailed work instructions
Preparing weld joints - cleaning, fitting, tacking, and positioning parts in fixtures and tooling per engineering drawings and process documentation
Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and technical work instructions to understand joint configurations, material types, and acceptance criteria
Performing visual self-inspection of completed welds against workmanship standards; identifying and reporting defects such as porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, or excessive reinforcement to the lead welder or quality inspector
Setting up and maintaining GTAW welding equipment - selecting correct filler wire, tungsten electrodes, shielding gas, and machine parameters per the applicable WPS
Using hand tools and precision measuring equipment - calipers, fillet gages, weld inspection gages, and tape measures - to verify fit-up dimensions and weld profiles
Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work area; adhering to all PPE requirements, safety protocols, welding ventilation standards, and housekeeping practices
Assisting senior welders with complex weld assemblies - positioning parts, purging back-side shielding gas, monitoring interpass temperatures, and handling post-weld operations such as grinding and blending
Participating in weld practice, qualification testing, and skills development activities to expand position and material certifications
Supporting material handling and shop operations - moving weldments, staging parts at work cells, and assisting with fixture setup and teardown
Minimum Qualifications:
2+ years of professional-level welding experience in an industrial, construction, or fabrication environment
Hands-on pipe and tube welding experience (carbon steel and/or stainless; thin-wall experience acceptable)
Experience performing welds on components subject to pressure loads (e.g., refineries, power plants, steam systems, process piping)
Demonstrated experience with NDT-quality welds, including work that has been inspected by methods such as:
X-ray / radiographic testing (RT)
Ultrasonic testing (UT), including phased array (PAUT) or automated UT (AUT), or similar advanced NDT
Ability to read and interpret welding drawings/blueprints, isometrics, and weld symbols
Experience working to welding codes/standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, or equivalent) and passing code-quality weld tests
Familiarity with basic inspection and measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, tape measures, squares) to verify fit-up and finished work
Proven track record of working safely in high-consequence environments (e.g., refineries, power plants, industrial facilities)
Ability to work in a shop environment, including standing for extended periods, lifting materials, and working in various positions (overhead, vertical, confined areas as needed)
U.S. person status as required by applicable regulations (U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum)
Preferred Qualifications:
Pipe fitting experience, including layout, fit-up, and alignment of pipe/tube systems prior to welding
Experience in construction or heavy industrial settings, such as refineries, power plants, paper mills, or similar facilities
Prior experience performing welds regularly subjected to NDT, including:
X-ray / RT
Phased array UT (PAUT) or automated UT (AUT)
Liquid penetrant (PT), including experience with multiple PT techniques
Experience with codes such as B31.1 or D17.1, or other aerospace/pressure piping codes
