Job description

Job Title: Floor Sommelier
Reports to: General Manager

Works Closely with: Saga Management, Lead Sommelier, Parcelle Wine Operations, 70 Pine Bar Manager + Leadership

ABOUT SAGA

SAGA is a Modern American fine dining restaurant located on the 63rd floor of 70 Pine Street in New York City’s Financial District.

Opened in 2021 by Chef Jamal James Kent, SAGA earned two Michelin stars within its first year and has maintained that standard through a  commitment to precision, discipline, and evolution.

Today, under the leadership of Executive Chef Charlie Mitchell, SAGA continues to push forward with a clear and focused vision.

The menu reflects a Modern American perspective, drawing from the richness of the Hudson Valley’s seasonal ingredients while embracing the diverse culinary influences that define New York City. Each tasting menu is shaped by a balance of refinement, creativity, and a strong sense of narrative.

The beverage program mirrors this philosophy, with a wine list that spans both classic and emerging regions, highlighting thoughtful, artisanal producers alongside benchmark estates. The program is designed to complement and elevate the guest experience with equal parts precision and discovery.

One floor above SAGA is Overstory, an award-winning cocktail bar offering panoramic views of the city. Together, the two concepts form a cohesive destination, united by a shared commitment to excellence, innovation, and world-class hospitality.

At every level, SAGA is driven by a pursuit of continuous improvement and a dedication to delivering an experience that is both exacting and memorable, an environment designed for hospitality professionals who are passionate about their craft and committed to operating at the highest level.

Overview:

This role is ideal for an experienced hospitality professional with extensive knowledge of wine and dedication to exceptional floor service. The Floor Sommelier will focus primarily on upholding established wine service standards, elevating guests' experience, and driving revenue.  This is a hands-on, service-oriented role that requires a presence on the floor during service.

Core Responsibilities:

Service Standards & Salesmanship

  • Uphold and maintain established wine service standards
  • Exemplify excellence in wine salesmanship, balancing revenue goals with genuine hospitality
  • Maintain an active and visible presence on the dining room floor, proactively identifying opportunities to assist guests and support the service team.
  • Engage guests confidently and thoughtfully, tailoring wine recommendations to their preferences, budget, occasion, and dining experience.
  • Drive wine sales through thoughtful recommendations, storytelling, pairings, and appropriate trade-up opportunities
  • Demonstrate mastery of fine wine service, including proper presentation, opening, decanting, temperature, glassware, pouring, and bottle maintenance throughout the meal.
  • Promote the full breadth of the wine program, including wine pairings, by-the-glass selections, and the bottle list, while guiding guests toward selections that best enhance their experience.
  • Recognize opportunities to increase wine engagement and spend while remaining sensitive to guest cues and individual levels of interest.
  • Build relationships with repeat guests and cultivate confidence in the wine program through personalized, knowledgeable, and memorable hospitality.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in beverage-focused roles within a Michelin-starred restaurant
  • Exemplary knowledge of global wine, spirits, and cocktails, with relevant certifications (e.g., WSET, CMS, BarSmarts)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on guest service and hospitality.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, maintaining composure and professionalism under pressure.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and service.
