Group Fitness Instructor Job Description

CLUB POLICIES AND COMPLIANCE

Group Fitness Instructors are expected to:

  • Understand, comply with, and remain accountable to all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Complete all required new hire training prior to teaching their first class.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines established by Mountainside Fitness and applicable certification organizations.
  • Understand and follow the Class Coverage Policy.
  • Accurately record class attendance for every class taught.
  • Teach a minimum of 75% of regularly scheduled classes.
  • Maintain valid, current, and approved certifications for all class formats instructed.


PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS

Instructors are responsible for maintaining a professional and welcoming environment by:

  • Demonstrating proper exercise form and possessing the physical ability to safely perform all class movements while providing clear verbal and visual cues as well as modifications/options as needed.
  • Arriving 10 minutes prior to the start of each class.
  • Wearing the designated MPower uniform top.
  • Beginning and ending classes as scheduled and on time.
  • Welcoming new Members by introducing yourself, explaining the class format, outlining expectations, and assisting with equipment setup, as needed.
  • Utilizing the Mountainside App to communicate class reminders, announcements, and equipment needs to members.
  • Making club announcements during class when appropriate.
  • Maintaining professionalism and a positive conduct at all times.


MEMBER EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE

Group Fitness Instructors are expected to prioritize the Member experience by:

  • Acting in the best interest of Members and delivering classes which align with the approved class format and description.
  • Building positive relationships and fostering an inclusive, supportive atmosphere.
  • Educating Members on proper exercise techniques and sharing current fitness knowledge and best practices.
  • Facilitating communication between Members and club management when necessary.


TEAMWORK AND CLUB SUPPORT

As team members, Instructors are expected to:

  • Check email regularly and respond to communications in a timely manner.
  • Assist with class coverage and substitute classes when available.
  • Participate in club events and support fellow Instructors and new class launches.
  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude toward Members, Instructors, and staff.
  • Promote Mountainside Fitness and personal classes through social media and community engagement.
  • Join and participate within the BAND app for team communication and updates.


FACILITY AND EQUIPMENT CARE

Instructors are responsible for maintaining a clean and safe environment by:

  • Treating all equipment, electronics, and club facilities with care and respect.
  • Cleaning up after classes and ensuring all equipment is returned to its designated storage area.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization within the studio and workout spaces.


EMPLOYEE MEMBERSHIP BENEFIT

Instructors who teach a minimum of one permanent class per week are eligible to receive a complimentary Employee Membership at Mountainside Fitness.


DISCLOSURE AND NON-COMPETE

Instructors must disclose all other fitness facilities at which they teach upon hire at Mountainside Fitness. To support instructor exclusivity, Mountainside Fitness may enforce the following Non-Compete Policy: Instructors may not teach within a 3-mile radius of any Mountainside Fitness location (measured via Google Maps) at: Crunch Fitness, LA Fitness, or EoS Fitness without written approval from appropriate Director or Manager. This applies to all group fitness formats and modalities. Grandfather Provision: Current instructors already teaching at a listed competitor location may continue doing so.


Requirements

Be familiar with the Mountainside Fitness Information Packet and Employee Handbook.

Complete all training within 30 days. Compensation is administered for all training unless otherwise noted. A drug test is required before starting work.

Abide by minimum safety guidelines as determined by MSF, with recommendations from ACE, AFAA, and current research.

Understand and adhere to MSF policies for obtaining a substitute and/or time-off vacation procedures. As the original instructor, if the substitute you find does not show up, both instructors will be issued a written warning.

Know the consequences: performance deficiencies will be addressed based on severity and may include verbal/written warnings or termination.
