Job description

Mountain Sports School Director

The Mountain Sports School Director will lead the school in a positive, safe, and responsible manner. The Mountain Sports School Director will coordinate with the Membership, Member Services, and Outfitters teams for reservations, lessons, and training to achieve a flawless and exceptional ski/snowboard experience for our members, their families, and their guests. The Mountain Sports School Director must operate with discretion and diplomacy. The Mountain Sports School Director must ensure all instructors are properly trained, certified, and maintain ongoing education and credentials to negate risk and provide a first-class experience. The Mountain Sports School Director must recommend, configure, and maintain technology systems to meet booking and scheduling needs of the department, and do so with efficiency and professionalism.

Job Duties:

  • Organizes and implements staffing plan for current season and forecasts for future development phases.
  • Creates and manages both ongoing and pre-season instructor training programs.
  • Manages teaching assignments and member interactions.
  • Assists in developing budget and ensures department spending is in accordance with variances clearly outlined
  • Manages department scheduling and payroll
  • Provides general support and sense of arrival to members exiting gondola at Oaks lodge. Utilizes OA staff to welcome and engage arriving members when appropriate and available.
  • Ensures OA team is consistently assigned appropriate tasks and engaged in activities that further department and WPR overall goals when not actively teaching lessons.
  • Actively participates in Village Services team meetings and develops strong working relationships with Village Services management team.
  • Schedules dynamically to accommodate changing need and conditions.
  • Proactively establishes a positive and healthy culture.
  • Ability to multitask and pivot quickly as member requests warrant.
  • Willingness to cross department lines to support other teams.
  • Actively continues to increase knowledge of core activities areas through research, industry engagement, and comparison with equivalently positioned programs

Licenses and Special Requirements:

  • PSIA Level 3 with additional teaching credentials
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and the ability to quickly adapt to WPR software solutions.
  • 8-10 years of Management experience in the Snow Sports School business.
  • Strong organizational and software skills a must.
  • Ability to be actively engaged, communicate and converse while skiing, riding, and demonstrating on a variety of terrain.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Expert level of skiing required on a variety of terrain and snowpack.
  • Safety and tactfully navigate all in-bound and out-bound ski areas.
  • Have a willingness to cross departmental lines to help as necessary.
  • Work outside in challenging and changing weather conditions.
  • Assist in snow shoveling efforts as needed to support mountain operations.
  • Handle extreme temperature and wind conditions.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Use two-way radios and emergency contact options, including beacons.
  • Give and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Visually inspect all areas for safety and risk.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environments, learn new techniques, collaborate, and share skills.
  • Retrieve, read, and interpret information from technical sources.
  • Stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, twist, turn, bend, kneel, and balance for extended amounts of time.
  • Lift up to 50lbs occasionally, 25lbs frequently, 10lbs constantly.
  • This is position that requires work in changing weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures and high wind (50 mph +) conditions for up to 2-4 hours at a time.
