What is a WPF Remote?

A WPF Remote job involves working with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) to develop desktop applications while operating remotely. WPF is a UI framework for building Windows applications using XAML and .NET. Remote WPF developers design, develop, and maintain applications, often collaborating with teams via online communication tools. These roles require expertise in C#, XAML, MVVM, and sometimes third-party libraries. Working remotely allows flexibility but also demands strong communication and self-management skills.

What does a typical workday look like for a WPF Remote?

As a remote WPF developer, your typical day involves collaborating with product managers and designers via online meetings, developing and debugging WPF applications, and participating in code reviews with your team using version control platforms like Git. You'll often work independently on assigned features or bug fixes, while maintaining regular communication with colleagues through chat and project management tools. Time management and proactive updates are key since remote teams rely on clear progress reporting. This structure allows you to focus on coding and problem-solving, while still being connected to a supportive, distributed team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the WPF Remote position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a WPF Remote developer, you need a solid background in .NET programming (especially C#), expertise in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) for building desktop applications, and experience with MVVM design patterns. Familiarity with Visual Studio, source control systems like Git, and experience with unit testing frameworks are commonly required, along with certifications in Microsoft technologies being a plus. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently are highly valued soft skills for remote success. These qualifications are important to ensure high-quality code, smooth collaboration across distributed teams, and timely delivery of complex software projects.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack

Job Number: 935

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack, you will serve as an experienced individual contributor on a cross-functional team, helping deliver reliable, maintainable software that supports meaningful government services.

You will work with minimal oversight and take ownership of your contributions throughout the software development lifecycle. In addition to hands-on engineering, you will help shape technical approaches, improve engineering practices, mentor other engineers, and collaborate directly with clients and stakeholders.

In this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate strong technical ownership and accountability for your contributions to the application codebase
  • Design, build, test, maintain, and improve full-stack applications and services
  • Maintain a strong understanding of adjacent technical systems and dependencies to effectively coordinate integrations across the broader technical ecosystem
  • Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues within the systems you support, using incidents and lessons learned to drive future system improvements
  • Evaluate multiple approaches to technical and process challenges and help the team make thoughtful, practical engineering decisions
  • Contribute to technical design and architecture discussions, including presenting design documents, system diagrams, and technical recommendations to engineers, clients, stakeholders, and partners
  • Communicate technical concepts, risks, tradeoffs, and developments clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers as they develop their technical skills
  • Lead small projects, technical initiatives, or temporary team structures when needed
  • Identify opportunities to improve software engineering processes, development practices, system reliability, and team effectiveness
  • Participate in technical interviews and help evaluate prospective engineering candidates
  • Effectively integrate AI-assisted development tools into your workflow to accelerate delivery while maintaining sound judgment around code quality, security, maintainability, and architectural fit
  • Stay current with evolving software engineering and AI-assisted development practices, continuously evaluating where new tools and approaches can meaningfully improve engineering speed and quality

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong experience developing and maintaining production software across both frontend and backend technologies
  • Expert-level knowledge in at least one technical area, such as frontend, backend, application architecture, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, or DevOps
  • Experience designing, developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining modern web applications and services
  • Experience working with APIs, databases, distributed systems, and integrations between applications or services
  • Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot complex technical problems and drive them through resolution
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and communicating technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to other engineers
  • Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs and contribute to architecture and engineering decisions
