How much do workover rig jobs pay per hour?
What is a workover rig?
A Workover Rig job involves performing maintenance, repair, and completion tasks on existing oil and gas wells to improve production and extend their lifespan. Workers operate specialized equipment to replace downhole components, fix casing issues, or stimulate the well. The job requires physical labor, mechanical skills, and adherence to strict safety procedures. Workover rig crews often work in remote locations and follow shift-based schedules.
What does a typical work schedule look like for someone on a workover rig?
Workover rig crews generally operate on a rotational schedule, such as 14 days on and 14 days off, or similar shifts, depending on the company and location. During your shift, you can expect long workdays—often 12 hours or more—outdoors and in varying weather conditions, with teamwork at the core as crews collaborate closely to maintain safety and operational efficiency. The environment can be physically demanding, but it also offers camaraderie and a strong sense of accomplishment. Many companies provide opportunities for overtime and advancement into supervisory or specialist roles for experienced crew members. If you're adaptable and enjoy hands-on problem solving, the workover rig environment could be a great fit.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the workover rig position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a Workover Rig position, you need strong mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and experience with oilfield equipment, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant on-the-job training. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as workover rigs, hoisting systems, and well servicing equipment, as well as safety certifications like H2S and Well Control, are typically required. Strong teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help operators navigate challenges and maintain a safe work environment. These skills are critical for minimizing downtime and ensuring safe, efficient well interventions in demanding field conditions.

Job description
Hilcorp Internship Program
Hilcorp offers field and office internships to students based upon previous experience and current course work. Field interns will work on the North Slope and Prudhoe Bay of AK.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Field internships are offered to students taking freshman and sophomore level classes. Freshman field interns will be exposed to daily field operations as well as facility construction, workover rig operations, drilling rig operations, and coiled tubing operations. Sophomore students will be exposed to the same operations but will also work on and present an engineering project for the second half of the summer that can range from optimizing facilities to optimizing and implementing secondary recovery equipment. At the completion of the internship, students will have a better understanding of oilfield fluid types, processing, and handling; artificial lift methods, the importance of volumes and pressures, and the production path from reservoir to sales. This understanding will yield a distinct advantage in their petroleum classes.
- Junior level students and above will be eligible for an office internship working with one of our asset teams. Office interns will conduct reservoir studies that will include analyzing well logs, working with a geologist to draft structure and net pay maps, managing pressure and production databases, and analyzing that data to quantify the oil and gas reserves of the project. Interns will also evaluate the economics of projects, research well files, create wellbore diagrams, and work with operations to create the workover procedure for the project they work on. The internship will include presentations throughout the summer to management for project approvals as needed. Past intern projects have included single field studies, recomplete proposals, and drillwells. Interns then oversee the approved project in the field if possible.
- Adheres to the company's values – integrity, ownership, urgency, alignment and innovation.
- Supports company vision and mission.
- Adheres to established work schedule, attendance standards and is punctual to work and meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- Applicant must have full summer available.
- Intern should have an interest in pursuing a career in the oil & gas industry.
- 3.0 or higher GPA
Education Requirements:
- Students working towards either their BS or MS in Petroleum Engineering are encouraged to apply.
