Job description

Mechanical EngineerIndustrial Paint Finishing and Turnkey Manufacturing SystemsLocation: Auburn Hills, MichiganIndustry Focus

Industrial manufacturing, automotive paint finishing, process equipment, turnkey manufacturing systems, mechanical systems, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and launch support.

Position Summary

A leading industrial manufacturing and paint finishing systems company is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the design, engineering, and execution of complex finishing system projects.

This is not a standard product design position. The right person needs to understand how mechanical design decisions affect fabrication, installation, field execution, customer changes, launch timing, safety, quality, cost, and customer acceptance.

This role works closely with engineering, design, manufacturing, project management, purchasing, vendors, installers, and customer teams to help deliver mechanical systems that are practical, buildable, serviceable, and aligned with project scope.

Responsibilities
  • Support the design and engineering of mechanical systems used in industrial paint finishing and manufacturing environments.
  • Develop, review, and update layouts, mechanical assemblies, equipment arrangements, ductwork, structural supports, platforms, piping, conveyors, and related system components.
  • Create and review drawings, models, layouts, and technical documentation used for fabrication, installation, and field execution.
  • Work with designers, project managers, manufacturing teams, purchasing, vendors, installers, and customers throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review mechanical designs for fit, function, manufacturability, installation, safety, cost, quality, and field practicality.
  • Support engineering changes, customer revisions, drawing updates, field questions, and timing driven project needs.
  • Assist with equipment layouts, system integration, installation planning, commissioning support, startup activity, and launch readiness.
  • Provide technical support during fabrication, installation, startup, debug, and customer acceptance.
  • Identify design concerns early and help provide practical solutions that protect schedule, quality, safety, and cost.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and support internal quality, safety, and process requirements.
Required Experience
  • 5 or more years of mechanical engineering experience in paint finishing, industrial equipment, manufacturing systems, process equipment, industrial HVAC, ventilation, conveyors, fabrication, automation adjacent systems, or related heavy industrial environments.
  • Ability to read, interpret, develop, and review mechanical drawings, equipment layouts, assemblies, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of how mechanical systems are fabricated, installed, commissioned, and supported in the field.
  • Experience working with engineering, design, project management, manufacturing, purchasing, vendors, contractors, installers, and customers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical design issues and provide practical solutions in a project based environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to manage technical details while staying aligned with schedule, cost, safety, quality, and customer expectations.
Preferred Experience
  • Direct experience in industrial paint finishing systems or automotive paint shop environments.
  • Experience with booths, ovens, air houses, ventilation systems, ductwork, conveyors, platforms, piping, process equipment, structural supports, or integrated facility systems.
  • Experience supporting turnkey projects from design through fabrication, installation, startup, commissioning, and customer acceptance.
  • Background in automotive, aerospace, heavy truck, tier supplier, general industrial, or large manufacturing facility environments.
  • Familiarity with MS Office, MS Project, quality systems, project documentation, engineering change processes, and QOS or similar quality process requirements.
  • CAD experience. Specific CAD software requirements should be confirmed during intake.
