Work Hours: 40 hours per week

Provides care for children and infants in a church environment; changes diapers and clothes and ensures children and infants’ personal hygiene and safety; feeds and cleans children and infants; comforts and plays with children and infants; leads children’s activities for youth programs, including classroom training, tutoring, playground activities, bible study, and specialized programs; prepares and serves children snacks; maintains the cleanliness of the classroom/nursery area.

Key Responsibilities:

Child Care Responsibilities (90%)

  • Monitors all children and infants’ behavior and activities in a constant manner ensuring their health and safety at all times.
  • Provides constant care for the needs of the children in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure and healthy manner.
  • Exhibits control of the children and, when needed, displays proper discipline techniques.
  • Prepares and maintains up-to-date records and required reports (attendance, discipline reports, etc.).
  • Ensures the accountability, security and safety of children participating in activities and reports all accidents to the supervisor in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Administers basic first aid as necessary; reports any health issues with supervisor in accordance to policies and procedures.
  • Changes children and babies’ diapers and/or clothes as needed to ensure their comfort and personal hygiene.
  • Ensures that proper hygiene, including hand washing, is used when diapering and assisting children in the bathroom.
  • Ensures that proper hand washing hygiene is used by worker and children before and after snacks and before giving bottles to infants; prepares and serves children snacks.
  • Ensures that activities are geared to each child with concerns for their special needs, talents and age.
  • Builds and maintains effective and positive relationships with parents; notifies supervisors and parents of children’s progress on any special or unusual incidents.
  • Determines appropriate supplies and materials for recreational activities; ensures the children's safety in utilizing the same.
  • Provides opportunities for physical and mental stimulation through both inside and outside learning activities.

Cleaning Responsibilities (10%)

  • Ensures that the appearance, cleanliness and safe environment of the nursery/classroom/game room is maintained including disinfecting toys and equipment and putting in proper location at the end of each session.
  • Ensures that all classroom equipment is in good condition and is used and maintained properly.
  • Maintains the materials in an orderly fashion; maintains accountability for any supplies necessary for programs.
  • Cleans the kitchen, classrooms, table, floors, etc. in accordance with established sanitary standards.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate the English language effectively.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct all duties in accordance with the ministry of the organization and its Christian principles; conducts all communications and job duties with the highest level of professionalism.
  • Duties are usually performed by combinations of sitting, standing, and walking on a frequent change basis.
  • Moderate amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying children and heavy objects (more than 25 lbs.) frequently.
  • Ability to observe children and ensure their safety.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Child Behavior and Development.

  • Ability to ensure the safety, health, and cleanliness of babies and children.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of parents and remain sensitive to their concerns.
  • Ability to present a positive and professional image of The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to teach children Christian values.
  • Ability to plan, develop and implement effective childhood programs and activities

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.

and 

6 months experience working in a daycare environment preferred,

or 

any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Certifications:
CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within established timeframe)
