Managing Attorney Maui, Hawaii


The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii is Hawaiis oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with offices statewide. Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society.

We are seeking a Managing Attorney of our Maui County offices to lead a dedicated team of attorneys, advocates, and support staff in providing critical legal services to those in need. Responsibilities include representing clients and supervising staff who assist clients on Maui, Molokai and Lanai in the areas of family law, housing, consumer protection, and public assistance. The Managing Attorney is also responsible for project management; grant oversite; community engagement, outreach and education; supporting statewide initiatives; ensuring administrative compliance; and participation in overall program management as a member of the statewide management team.

Requirements:

  • Member in good standing of Hawaii State Bar Association strongly preferred. Attorneys licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 will also be considered.
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income populations, or issues affecting low-income populations required.
  • Supervisory and/or management experience required managing teams, scheduling, performance reviews, training, workflow optimization, and conflict resolution, demanding skills in leadership, communication, problem-solving, and budget management
  • Five (5) years of litigation experience is required. Three (3) years of practice in family law or other areas of Legal Aids practice is strongly preferred. Experience in child welfare cases as a guardian ad litem a plus.
  • Project management or experience implementing grants preferred.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with a small diverse team.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency, a must.
  • Able to manage a busy litigation practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Must have access to a car and ability to travel to on Maui. Some travel to Lanai and Molokai is also required.

Compensation: $80,501-$93,948 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
