Job description

Job Title: Structural DesignerJob Description

The Structural Designer independently develops and coordinates structural drawings and 3D models for large industrial gas turbine power projects. Working closely with structural engineers and multidisciplinary teams, this role translates engineering intent into accurate, constructible designs using Tekla Structures and SmartPLANT 3D, while supporting project execution, quality, and schedule objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain detailed 3D structural models using Tekla Structures and SmartPLANT 3D with minimal supervision.
  • Perform structural 3D modeling for structural steel frames, equipment support structures, access platforms, ladders, stairs, module support frames, and foundations as applicable.
  • Generate comprehensive structural drawings, including general arrangement drawings, steel framing layouts, connection and detailing drawings, and material take-offs.
  • Coordinate closely with piping, equipment, electrical, and civil teams to resolve clashes and ensure proper clearances, access, and constructability.
  • Support module-based design by incorporating transport, lifting, and erection considerations into the structural models and drawings.
  • Participate in model reviews at key project stages (30%, 60%, 90%) and actively support clash detection and resolution.
  • Ensure structural models comply with project specifications and applicable codes and standards, including AISC, AWS, and IBC.
  • Maintain accurate model data and promptly incorporate engineering changes and revisions.
  • Support fabrication and construction by delivering clear, accurate, and constructible models and drawings that meet field needs.
  • Deliver design outputs in alignment with project schedules, milestones, and quality requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement of structural modeling workflows, Tekla Structures templates, and SmartPLANT 3D integration.
  • Assist in developing and enforcing structural modeling standards, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Collaborate effectively with global and regional engineering teams, including external partners and vendors, to ensure cohesive project execution.
  • Protect confidential and proprietary company information at all times.
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively in a fast-paced project environment while meeting deadlines.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of experience as a Structural Designer or Drafter in industrial or power plant structural design and modeling, including experience supporting gas turbine, power plant, or heavy industrial projects.
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience with Tekla Structures and structural steel design.
  • Strong proficiency in Tekla Structures for structural steel modeling and detailing.
  • Working experience with SmartPLANT 3D (S3D) for multidiscipline plant coordination.
  • Solid understanding of industrial structural steel systems, including equipment support and module framing.
  • Knowledge of constructability principles and erection sequencing for industrial and power plant structures.
  • Familiarity with applicable structural and industrial standards such as AISC, AWS, and IBC, as well as project-specific specifications.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, design criteria, and vendor information and translate them into accurate models and drawings.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities applied to structural design and coordination challenges.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate degree or Technical Diploma in Drafting, Structural Design, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Experience in structural design and drafting for large industrial gas turbine power projects or similar heavy industrial facilities.
  • Background in structural analysis concepts related to steel design and industrial structures.
  • Experience supporting module-based design, including transport, lifting, and erection considerations.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, constructible drawings and models.
  • Ability to contribute to the development and improvement of structural modeling standards, workflows, and templates.
  • Comfort working with global and regional engineering teams and external partners in a collaborative project setting.
