What is Workday Testing?

Workday Testing is the process of validating and ensuring that the Workday software platform, including its modules and custom configurations, functions as intended after implementation or updates. It involves creating and executing test cases to verify business processes like HR, finance, payroll, and integrations. Workday Testing helps identify bugs, inconsistencies, or integration errors before the system goes live, ensuring a smooth transition and minimizing disruptions for end users. This process is crucial for organizations to ensure the reliability and accuracy of their Workday deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Workday Testing?

To thrive in Workday Testing, you need a solid understanding of HR, payroll, or finance processes along with experience in software testing methodologies and familiarity with Workday modules. Proficiency with test management tools (like Jira or ALM), Workday’s testing frameworks, and possibly certifications such as Workday Pro or ISTQB are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help testers identify issues and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills ensure that Workday implementations and updates are reliable, compliant, and meet business requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Workday Testing roles, and how can they be addressed?

To address these challenges, it's important to stay updated on Workday release notes, collaborate closely with functional teams to clarify requirements, and utilize automated testing tools where possible. Strong communication skills and a proactive approach to continuous learning can also help testers efficiently troubleshoot issues and contribute to successful project outcomes.

Job description

WHO WE ARE

We are PEAK6, a leading investment firm, using technology to find a better way of doing things. The company’s first tech-based solution was developed in 1997 to optimize options trading, and over the past two decades, the same formula has been used across a range of industries, asset classes, and business stages to consistently deliver superior results. Today, PEAK6 seeks transformational opportunities to provide capital and strategic support to entrepreneurs and forward-thinking businesses. PEAK6’s core brands include PEAK6 Capital Management, PEAK6 Strategic Capital, Apex Fintech Solutions, FOCUS, We Insure, Evil Geniuses, Poker Power, Zogo, and Bruce Markets.

ABOUT THIS ROLE Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Workday System Specialist to become an integral member of our People Tech team that supports the efficient configuration, operation, and enhancement of our Workday Human Capital Management (HCM) platform.

If you've worked in Workday administration at a large, compartmentalized organization, you know the frustration: you're allowed to be the expert in one or two areas, and that's where you stay unless a position opens up. This role is different. You’ll have the opportunity to provide real business value and grow your expertise across the full platform HCM, talent and performance, security, integrations, reporting, and beyond, with the freedom to dig into whatever needs solving, not just what's in your lane. It's a great fit for someone who wants to keep growing across the ecosystem instead of being restricted to a module.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in Workday HCM Core and additional experience in at least two other Workday functional areas such as: Talent Acquisition, Performance Optimization, Learning, Advanced Compensation, Prism Analytics, Advanced Reporting, etc.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Firmwide stakeholders to understand requirements, design solutions, and execute process improvements while balancing centralized standards with the flexibility of a multi-entity environment with varied requirements.
  • Evaluate and implement new Workday features and system enhancements, recommending configuration improvements that support evolving business needs.
  • Participate in system testing during Workday's semi-annual release cycles — reviewing release notes, assessing impact on configuration, and coordinating regression/UAT testing alongside the broader admin team.
  • Support Workday security administration (security groups, role-based/user-based access) to maintain proper data access and reporting permissions.
  • Design, build, and maintain Business Process configurations across HCM and related functional areas, translating business requirements into scalable system solutions.
  • Build and maintain advanced custom reports using Workday Report Writer, leveraging calculated fields and other reporting functionalities.
  • Support supervisory organization structure and maintenance, including reorganizations and org hierarchy integrity across PEAK6 and its affiliates, in collaboration with fellow admins and HR Partners.
  • Support the payroll and benefits teams for functional system changes, enhancements, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain clear documentation for configurations, business processes, and testing outcomes to support knowledge continuity.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 3+ years of experience working within the Workday ecosystem, with demonstrated competence in HCM.
  • Competency with Workday Report Writer for custom reporting and advanced calc field configuration (including but not limited to matrix and composite reports).
  • Solid understanding of Workday's security framework, including domain and business process security policies.
  • Experience with at least one additional Workday module, such as Talent Acquisition, Performance, Advanced Compensation, Prism, People Analytics, Integrations.
  • At a minimum, an understanding of data integration concepts, including EIBs (Enterprise Interface Builder), and APIs.
Preferred Skills and Attributes
  • Pro HCM Core Certification preferred.
  • Experience in supporting an HRIS system for Private Equity, Financial, or complex organization(s) with multiple affiliates, multi-location and/or global organizations.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities concurrently and experience with/basic understanding of Agile Project Management principles.
  • Ability to think strategically and propose innovative HRIS solutions to improve business outcomes.
  • Willingness to utilize and implement strategic and innovative AI solutions to improve processes and gain efficiencies.
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on delivering excellent system support and user satisfaction.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve Workday-related issues.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to data accuracy, compliance, and system integrity.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
