Job Description:
Teach. Mentor. Inspire. Make a real difference with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS). More than just a job, this is an opportunity to bring the power of education to those who need it most, fostering hope and creating pathways for successful integration through High School, Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, Career Readiness academic core, and English as a Second Language. All teacher positions are assigned under Central Office (CO) and are tasked to support specific facilities. All teacher positions are subject to support education at any NDCS facility as needed.
Please indicate in your application which facility you are applying for -- current vacancies are available in Lincoln at the Reception and Treatment Center (2) and Nebraska State Penitentiary (2).
Starting salary is $44,348, with additional pay based on total contracted days, degree level, and years of experience. Salary will be set in accordance with the State Code Agencies Teachers Association (SCATA) contract.

Duties:
  • Plan lessons for individual students and groups of students.
  • Teach small and large group classes in math, science, social studies, reading, language, and instruct a program for English as a second language as needed.
  • Work with students whose abilities range from 0 to 12.9+ grade levels and ages range from 14 to 65+.
  • Utilize various online learning resources to integrate secure technology into lessons.
  • Document classroom activities/student progress weekly.
  • Maintain classroom supervision and discipline while overseeing and training inmate teacher aides.
  • Completing monthly payroll for incarcerated individuals.
  • Identify student learning materials to recommend for purchase.
  • Develop and produce learning boards, computer generated worksheets, tests, lessons, classroom management tools, and other items as needed.
  • Maintain various computer-based data management system requirements related to education, Education LACES, and Nebraska Inmate Case Management System (NICaMS) data.
  • Work with existing staff to develop a team approach to education.
  • Maintain tool control and inventory.
  • Monitor designated areas for cleanliness, maintain supply inventory, and complete required safety and sanitation reports.

Requirements/Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications: Background working with at-risk or high-risk students and/or in a correctional setting. History of working with highly differentiated learners on individualized learning paths. Training in Orton-Gillingham and familiarity with online learning systems such as IXL, Essential Education, or SchoolsPLP. Computer skills to include Windows, Word, and Excel.
Other: Transcripts required prior to appointment. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass a pre-employment medical exam and a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Training Program.
