Controls Engineer


Location: Nashville, TN

Job Type: Full-Time | Contract

Pay: $92.59 per hour


Position Overview


SGF Global is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support a highly automated manufacturing facility. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, optimizing, and maintaining industrial automation and control systems that drive safe, reliable, and efficient production.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience with PLC programming, industrial automation platforms, high-speed manufacturing equipment, and process optimization in a manufacturing environment.


Key Responsibilities


  • Design, program, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC, HMI, SCADA, and industrial control systems.
  • Support automation across processing, packaging, and conveying equipment.
  • Configure and maintain VFDs, servo systems, instrumentation, and process control systems.
  • Integrate OEM equipment into plant-wide automation systems.
  • Standardize control system programming, documentation, and automation platforms.
  • Provide technical support during equipment downtime and production issues.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, communication, and automation failures.
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Manage controls-related activities for capital projects from design through commissioning.
  • Coordinate with OEMs, contractors, system integrators, and internal engineering teams.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and system validation.
  • Maintain system documentation, backups, and change management records.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, reliability improvements, and operational efficiency.
  • Support Integrated Work Systems (IWS) and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, electrical standards, and machine safety requirements.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of Controls Engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with industrial automation platforms such as Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, FactoryTalk, or Wonderware.
  • Knowledge of HMI, SCADA, industrial networking, instrumentation, VFDs, and servo systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical schematics and control panel designs.
  • Experience supporting high-speed automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project coordination skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in food, beverage, consumer packaged goods (CPG), or other high-speed manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with automated processing and packaging systems.
  • Knowledge of batch control systems and process automation.
  • Experience with MES, OEE, and manufacturing data systems.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and industrial machine safety standards.
