Position Overview

Daifuku is seeking a Controls Engineer II to support the development and enhancement of automation products used in material handling applications. This role is responsible for designing control systems, developing PLC programs, creating electrical schematics, and supporting product development from concept through field implementation.

The ideal candidate will have experience with industrial automation, conveyor and sortation equipment, or robotics, and be comfortable working cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and field teams to deliver reliable, cost-effective solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop controls solutions for material handling equipment, including conveyors, sortation systems, automated storage, fulfillment, and robotics applications.
  • Create electrical schematics, control panel layouts, device drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Develop and troubleshoot PLC programming using Allen-Bradley platforms.
  • Define and document machine sequences of operation and system functionality.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop new products and improve existing designs.
  • Ensure products align with manufacturing capabilities, quality standards, and customer requirements.
  • Conduct prototype development, validation testing, and performance verification.
  • Support onsite commissioning and beta testing to ensure safety, reliability, and performance objectives are met.
  • Investigate field issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain project schedules, engineering documentation, and cost estimates.
  • Follow engineering standards, software revision control practices, and safety requirements.
  • Participate in machine risk assessments and ensure compliance with applicable electrical and safety codes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with conveyor systems, sortation equipment, material handling systems, or robotics.
  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley PLC hardware and software.
  • Working knowledge of machine safety standards, electrical codes, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with industrial automation systems, HMI development, and SCADA platforms.
  • Familiarity with automated warehouse, distribution center, or manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting product development and new technology implementation.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of PLC-based control systems and industrial automation.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and controls issues.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and creative-thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Self-motivated with a continuous learning mindset.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative approach to engineering projects.
  • Flexibility to support site activities and occasional non-traditional work hours.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office, manufacturing, and customer-site environments.
  • Exposure to industrial equipment, electrical systems, and active construction or commissioning sites.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work in confined areas, kneel, crouch, and perform site inspections as needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally and work safely around moving mechanical equipment.

Why Join Daifuku?

  • Work for a global leader in material handling automation and robotics.
  • Contribute to innovative products used by leading manufacturers, retailers, and distribution networks.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers on cutting-edge automation technologies.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to product development, commissioning, and field implementation projects across North America.

Target Candidate: Controls Engineer with 2+ years of experience in Allen-Bradley PLC programming, industrial automation, conveyors/sortation systems, or robotics who enjoys owning projects from design through commissioning.
