MEP PROJECT SPECIALIST
The MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) Project Specialist provides technical expertise and support to project teams throughout the full project lifecycle-from conceptual design through construction, startup, commissioning, and final turnover. This role places strong emphasis on equipment procurement, installation, system startup, and commissioning, as well as the implementation and integration of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), and Process Control Systems.
The MEP Project Specialist serves as a trusted technical resource, strengthening relationships with engineers, subcontractors, and clients through clear communication, responsiveness, and a consistent focus on quality and value.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in the design, installation, operation, or commissioning of MEP engineered systems for complex projects, such as:
  • Mission-critical facilities
  • Semiconductor fabrication facilities
  • Cleanrooms
  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Pharmaceutical facilities
  • Central utility plants (power and/or cooling)

Strong working knowledge of:
  • HVAC systems (chillers, boilers, AHUs, VAVs, hydronic systems)
  • Electrical distribution systems (normal and emergency power)
  • Plumbing and specialty piping systems

Preferred:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.), Bluebeam Revu, and Procore
  • Experience with Building Automation and Electrical Monitoring Systems
  • Experience with HVAC equipment design, selection, and procurement
  • Experience supporting MEP equipment startups and commissioning

Office and Travel:
Primarily works in corporate headquarters office in St. Paul, MN. Regular travel to jobsites in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and out of town travel up to 20% as necessary.
Responsibilities and Tasks:
Pre-Construction Phase:
  • Review architectural and engineering documents (drawings and specifications) for compliance with owner requirements, applicable codes, constructability, industry standards, and system optimization.
  • Participate in page-turn reviews with clients and the A/E team.
  • Support value engineering efforts and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Assist in identifying long-lead equipment and support procurement efforts.
  • Contribute to bid instructions and subcontractor scope development to avoid scope gaps.
  • Assist with evaluation of subcontractor proposals and qualifications.
  • Support the preparation of project cost estimates.

Construction:
  • Assist Project Manager and subcontractors in the interpretation of the contract documents.
  • Assist in developing and resolving RFIs when appropriate.
  • On-site reviews with MEP subcontractors to review progress, work planning and
  • Provide QA/QC oversite for MEP equipment and system installations.
  • Review the project schedule and provide feedback to the PM regarding installation sequencing, system testing and commissioning activities.

Start-Up and Close-Out
  • Review engineering drawings and specifications to confirm systems are installed and prepared for proper operation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Provide on-site technical support and oversight during startup of major equipment and systems.
  • Support complex controls systems including I&C, BAS, PLC, PCS, SCADA, and EMS.
  • Review close-out documentation to ensure completeness and compliance with contract requirements.
  • Provide technical training to Project Managers and site staff on engineered systems.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices.

Management
  • Provide professional and technical mentorship to staff.

Other Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with, build and maintain relationships with internal teams, contractors and other stakeholders to align risk management efforts.
  • Attend any training - personal and/or professional development - that is relevant to the position
  • Support and follow standard work
  • Participate in Lean events and support the McGough Way
  • Participate in McGough committees to promote risk management alignment with company initiatives
  • Represent McGough externally in a leadership role that substantially positively impacts the reputation of McGough in the community

In alignment with our commitment to pay transparency, the base salary range for this position is $105,000 to $150,000, excluding fringe benefits or potential bonuses. If you join McGough, your final base salary will be determined by several factors, including geography, location, skills, education, and experience. Furthermore, we place significant value on pay equity among our current team members as part of any final job offer.
Please note that the range provided above reflects the hiring range for this role. Hiring near the top end of this range would be atypical, as we aim to allow room for future salary growth. Additionally, McGough offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package. This includes insurance coverage for medical, dental, vision, life, and disability.
