The Opportunity:

The Director of Education Abroad at Washington State University provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and risk management expertise for a comprehensive global learning portfolio. This role shapes the curricular and cocurricular vision for education abroad, oversees international health and safety operations, and manages a complex organization that supports students and faculty traveling internationally each year. The Director ensures program quality, regulatory compliance, and traveler wellbeing while cultivating global partnerships and advancing the institution's internationalization mission.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time (100% FTE), permanent position. This position is overtime exempt.

Monthly Salary:

$6,800.33 - $7,013.17 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least three (3) years of managerial experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a yearforyear basis. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment.

  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in international education, global safety, risk management, or related fields.

  • Familiarity with best practices in international education and higher education administration.

  • Demonstrated supervisory/managerial experience in an international education office.

  • Advanced intercultural competencies and demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and briefing senior leaders.

  • Experience with crisis management, emergency response, and risk mitigation.

  • Proven ability to manage change, including organizational and cultural change.

  • Experience analyzing data and applying findings to improve programs and operations.

  • Terra Dotta software experience, or experience with a similar software platform.

  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree.

  • International experience abroad (e.g., Peace Corps,NGO, academic, or professional work abroad).

  • Proficiency in a second language.

  • Experience with travel tracking systems, international insurance, and safety protocols.
