Job Title: Fire Alarm & Life Safety Construction Administration Engineer
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced, technically proficient, and safety-focused Fire Alarm & Life Safety Construction Administration Engineer to support complex data center facilities projects. In this role, you will provide technical design leadership for fire alarm, detection, smoke control, and suppression systems, guiding projects seamlessly from initial concept through construction administration and commissioning.
This is a dynamic engineering role combining office-based design and drawing production with active on-site construction administration (traveling approximately 25% of the time). You will perform punch walks, witness testing, interface with local code officials and clients, and ensure code-compliant asset protection across multiple concurrent projects. Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering Leadership
• Systems Design: Provide technical design leadership for fire alarm, detection, VESDA, smoke control, suppression, and low-voltage life safety systems for mission-critical facilities.
• Drawing Production: Develop comprehensive construction deliverables in 2D and 3D platforms, including equipment layouts, network diagrams, calculations, and specifications.
• Code Compliance: Apply strict adherence to local and national building codes (IBC, IFC, NFPA 72, NFPA 101, NEC) and interface directly with AHJs and code officials.
• Project Ownership: Manage multiple concurrent projects as the engineer of record, coordinating with peers, SMEs, and BIM designers.
Construction Administration & Field Support
• Jobsite Travel: Travel a minimum of 25% to various project sites to provide hands-on construction administration services.
• Testing & Inspection: Perform rigorous punch walks, witness system testing, and provide design assistance during installation and commissioning.
• Client Engagement: Interface directly with client counterparts and vendors to resolve technical field issues and ensure seamless project execution.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, or related discipline).
• Experience Baseline: Minimum of 4+ years of professional engineering experience in fire alarm and life safety systems, including direct field experience installing, inspecting, or testing fire alarm systems.
• Technical Mastery:
oIn-depth knowledge of Fire Alarm Systems and major equipment manufacturers (e.g., Notifier, Edwards, Xtralis / VESDA).
oStrong command of regulatory codes: IBC, IFC, NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code), NFPA 72 (Fire Alarm & Signaling Code), and NFPA 70 (NEC).
oProven experience leading projects, managing resources, and producing construction specifications.
• Core Competencies: Excellent problem-solving abilities; strong interpersonal communication skills for client and contractor interactions; willingness and ability to travel up to 25% for site visits.
Preferred Attributes
• Active Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• 4+ years of Autodesk Revit design experience for data center or industrial facilities.
• Specialized knowledge of data center standards and fire codes (NFPA 75, NFPA 76, NFPA 2001, NFPA 13).
• Experience mentoring junior staff and estimating/scheduling mid-to-large-scale projects.
