How much do wiring harness engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for wiring harness engineer in the United States is $49.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40.87 and $57.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Wiring Harness Engineer vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectWiring Harness EngineerElectrical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering or related field, with knowledge of wiring standardsRequires a degree in electrical engineering, with broader design and circuit analysis skills
Work EnvironmentWorks mainly in manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, or industrial settings focusing on harness assemblyWorks in design offices or R&D labs, focusing on circuit and system design
Industry UsageCommonly used in automotive, aerospace, and industrial manufacturingUsed across various sectors including consumer electronics, automotive, and aerospace

The Wiring Harness Engineer specializes in designing and assembling wiring harnesses for various industries, focusing on physical wiring layouts and connections. In contrast, the Electrical Design Engineer has a broader role in designing electrical systems and circuits. While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge, the Wiring Harness Engineer emphasizes practical wiring solutions, whereas the Electrical Design Engineer focuses on system-level design.

What are some common challenges Wiring Harness Engineers face when coordinating with cross-functional teams during vehicle development?

Wiring Harness Engineers often collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to ensure harnesses meet both technical and practical requirements. A common challenge is managing design changes late in the development cycle, which can impact routing, connector selection, and system integration. Effective communication and early involvement in the design process help minimize disruptions and ensure harnesses are manufacturable and serviceable. Building strong relationships with other departments is key to resolving issues quickly and delivering high-quality products on schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Wiring Harness Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Wiring Harness Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and experience with harness layout, typically supported by a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or AutoCAD), wiring diagram tools, and industry standards like IPC/WHMA-A-620 is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help engineers collaborate on complex projects and resolve design issues. These competencies ensure that harness systems are reliable, meet safety standards, and integrate seamlessly with overall product designs.

What are Wiring Harness Engineers?

Wiring Harness Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and oversee the production of wiring harnesses used in vehicles, machinery, or electronic systems. They ensure that bundles of wires and cables are organized, safely routed, and meet all technical and safety standards. Their work involves collaborating with design teams, creating schematics, selecting materials, and troubleshooting electrical issues during manufacturing or installation.

Job description

As a Wiring Harness Engineer at Carbon Robotics be a key part of the team that designs and lays out the wiring interconnect system, testing new systems and iterating on designs with your mechanical and software peers. You'll develop system layouts, block diagrams, BOMs, and schematics in CAD, and provide manufacturing support to our CM partners. You'll do whatever it takes - which might include going to the farm - to ensure our customers have reliable and safe products.

What you'll do:

  • Work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team to design revolutionary products
  • Responsible for the design (including selection of harness components and hardware, connectors, backshells, cable and wire) of electrical harnesses for power distribution, grounding, RF, communication and high-speed data signal
  • Quickly prototype, troubleshoot, and iterate designs for the electrical wiring systems with ownership and deep collaboration
  • Design and integration of harness routing and support brackets and writing work instructions for hardware installation
  • Support the assembly and testing of cables and harnesses during initial engineering development all the way through post sales support
  • Deliver results through project planning, task management and delegation and problem solving efforts to iterate quickly
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for Success:
  • 3+ years experience as Electrical Engineer designing wiring harness for large electrical systems
  • Experience with Capital Harness design software is required

  • Experience working with contract manufacturing for wiring harnesses
  • Experience with vehicle or automotive wiring harnesses
  • Experience with high voltage (40kV+) and/or 240V harnessing design highly preferred but not required
  • Experience designing wiring systems for harsh outdoor environments w/ EMI
  • Experience with SOLIDWORKS highly preferred but not required
  • Experience with Jira is a plus
  • Hands on experience in hardware debug and automated verification
  • Experience with PLCs and industrial sensors/controllers a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team to achieve timely objectives
  • Awareness of industry standards and regulations (SAE, ISO, IPC, etc.)
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and a desire to work in multidisciplinary teams
  • BS+ in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
