How much do wiring harness design jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for wiring harness design in the United States is $49.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $40.87 and $57.21 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is wiring harness design?

Wiring harness design involves creating the plans and layouts for electrical wiring systems that connect various components in vehicles, machinery, or electronic devices. Designers select wires, connectors, and protective materials to ensure efficient and reliable power and signal transmission. The process includes understanding electrical requirements, safety standards, and physical constraints of the equipment. Effective wiring harness design improves performance, reduces manufacturing costs, and simplifies maintenance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wiring harness designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Wiring Harness Designer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and familiarity with industry standards, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with CAD software (such as CATIA, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD Electrical), wiring diagram tools, and knowledge of regulatory compliance is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and interpreting technical requirements. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compliant harness designs that meet project specifications and industry regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by wiring harness design engineers, and how can they be managed?

Wiring harness design engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex routing in limited spaces, ensuring compatibility with evolving electrical systems, and meeting stringent safety and regulatory standards. Effective collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams is essential to address these challenges early in the design process. Utilizing advanced CAD tools and regularly reviewing designs with cross-functional teams can help identify potential issues before production, resulting in more reliable and cost-effective solutions.

What is the difference between Wiring Harness Design vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectWiring Harness DesignElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTechnical certifications, CAD trainingEngineering degree (B.S. or higher), PE license (optional)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, automotive, aerospace industriesDesign, testing, systems integration across industries
Employer & Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial equipmentElectronics, power systems, automation

Wiring Harness Design focuses on creating detailed layouts for electrical wiring assemblies, often requiring CAD skills and industry-specific certifications. Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, designing electrical systems, analyzing circuits, and often holding engineering degrees. While both roles work in related industries, Wiring Harness Designers specialize in harness layouts, whereas Electrical Engineers handle overall electrical system design and analysis.

What does a wiring harness design engineer do?

A wiring harness design engineer develops and creates electrical wiring systems that connect various components within vehicles, machinery, or electronic devices. They use CAD software to design layouts, ensure safety and compliance standards, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to produce reliable wiring solutions.
