Job Summary
The Networking Manager is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, maintenance, security, and operational reliability of Savannah State University network infrastructure, including wired and wireless networks, telecommunications, VoIP, video surveillance, life-safety network devices, routers, switches, firewalls, UPS-supported network equipment, and related systems. This position serves as the technical lead for network services, supervises assigned networking staff, coordinates vendors and projects, and ensures network services are secure, stable, documented, and responsive to academic, administrative, residential, and campus safety needs.
NOTE: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND DUTY WEIGHTS
Total weight: 100%. Percentages reflect the expected annual emphasis of the position and may shift based on institutional priorities, system upgrades, audits, compliance needs, or major projects.
Network Engineering, Administration, and Performance Management 30%
  • Design, configure, install, monitor, maintain, and optimize campus network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, wired and wireless networks, VLANs, routing, DNS/DHCP-related coordination, telecommunications, and other network systems.
  • Monitor network utilization and performance, identify capacity needs, and develop implementation plans for upgrades, expansions, and new services.

Network Security, Risk Mitigation, and Access Controls 20%
  • Develop, implement, and maintain network security protocols, standards, procedures, and controls to protect university data and information systems.
  • Coordinate network patching, vulnerability remediation, firewall rule review, access controls, authentication support, incident response, post-incident analysis, and collaboration with cybersecurity personnel.

VoIP, Video Surveillance, Life-Safety, and Campus Technology Support 15%
  • Configure, install, maintain, and troubleshoot Cisco VoIP, video surveillance systems, call boxes, call towers, UPS systems, and other network-connected campus technologies.
  • Support academic and administrative computing needs where network services are required.

Troubleshooting, Incident Response, and Service Delivery 15%
  • Diagnose and resolve network connectivity, voice, wireless, surveillance, and network equipment issues.
  • Use Helpdesk/ticketing software to document work, track service requests, communicate status, and provide timely support to faculty, staff, students, vendors, and campus partners.

Project Management, Vendor Coordination, and Documentation 10%
  • Plan and coordinate network-related projects, upgrades, hardware deployments, cabling requests, vendor engagements, implementation schedules, and service changes.
  • Maintain current network diagrams, inventories, configurations, support procedures, and technical documentation.

Supervision, Team Leadership, and Collaboration 5%
  • Supervise assigned network staff and/or student workers, assign and review work, evaluate performance, provide technical guidance, and support professional development.
  • Collaborate with IT units and campus departments to align network services with operational needs.

Other Duties as Assigned 5%
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned in support of Information Technology Services and University operations.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in networking, cybersecurity, information technology, computer science, or a related field and six (6) years of progressively responsible network administration, network engineering, telecommunications, or information technology experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, networking, or a related field and four (4) years of progressively responsible network administration, network engineering, telecommunications, or information technology experience.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory, team lead, project lead, or technical lead experience.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to participate in after-hours support, scheduled maintenance windows, and emergency response as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in information technology, cybersecurity, computer science, networking, or a related discipline.
  • Six (6) or more years of experience supporting enterprise network environments, with at least three (3) years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience with Cisco networking, Cisco VoIP, wireless network administration, video surveillance systems, firewalls, network monitoring tools, life-safety network devices, and campus cabling/vendor coordination.
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, Network+, Security+, Cisco Specialist, CompTIA, Microsoft networking, SSCP, CISSP, CISM, or comparable credentials.

Proposed Salary
The salary range for this position is $69,500.00 to $74,500.00.

  • Knowledge of LAN, WAN, WLAN, TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, DNS/DHCP concepts, VoIP, firewalls, VPN, network monitoring, and related network protocols.
  • Knowledge of network security principles, vulnerability mitigation, patching, access controls, incident response, and risk management practices.
  • Knowledge of Cisco networking equipment, VoIP systems, video surveillance systems, UPS units, and network-connected campus/life-safety devices.
  • Skill in configuring, installing, troubleshooting, and documenting network equipment and related systems.
  • Skill in interpreting network utilization, capacity, performance, and reliability data to recommend improvements.
  • Skill in project coordination, vendor management, service ticket management, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to lead, train, motivate, and evaluate technical staff.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands in a high-pressure environment with institution-wide service impact.
