What is a Wire EDM operator?

A Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) operator is a skilled technician who uses specialized machinery to cut complex shapes and parts from metal using a thin, electrically charged wire. The process is highly precise and is often used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and tooling where intricate designs or tight tolerances are required. Operators are responsible for setting up the machine, programming the cut paths, monitoring the cutting process, and ensuring that the finished parts meet exact specifications. They also perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot issues to keep the equipment running efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Wire EDM operator?

To thrive as a Wire EDM Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and precision measurement, often supported by technical training or vocational certification. Familiarity with CNC programming, CAD/CAM software, and operation of EDM machines is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong organizational skills help you excel in producing high-precision components. These competencies are crucial for ensuring quality, efficiency, and safety in precision manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Wire EDM operators and how can they be addressed?

Wire EDM operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances, managing wire breakage, and optimizing machine settings for different materials. These issues can be addressed by careful machine calibration, regular maintenance, and ongoing training on the latest software and technology. Collaborating closely with engineers and quality assurance teams also helps operators troubleshoot issues quickly and ensure that finished parts meet exact specifications.

What is the difference between Wire Edm vs CNC Machinist?

AspectWire EdmCNC Machinist
Required CredentialsTechnical certifications, training in EDM processesTechnical certifications, machining or manufacturing training
Work EnvironmentPrecision manufacturing, electrical discharge machining facilitiesMachine shops, manufacturing plants with CNC equipment
Industry UsageElectronics, aerospace, tooling industriesAutomotive, aerospace, general manufacturing

Wire Edm and CNC Machinist both require technical skills and certifications, often working in manufacturing environments. Wire Edm specializes in electrical discharge machining for complex, precise parts, while CNC Machinists operate computer-controlled machines for a variety of parts. Both roles are essential in precision manufacturing but differ in their specific processes and applications.

Job description

We’re hiring an experienced Wire EDM / Sinker EDM Machinist to join our precision toolmaking team. This is a highly skilled role focused on programming, setting up, and operating Agie Charmilles Wire and Sinker EDM machines to manufacture complex tooling, production components, fixtures, and precision assemblies.

This position is ideal for a machinist who enjoys solving difficult manufacturing challenges, holding extremely tight tolerances, and working on one-of-a-kind tooling rather than repetitive production. You’ll own projects from programming and setup through final inspection while collaborating closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to improve processes and deliver high-quality parts.

Why Join Us

  • Precision Tooling Environment: Work on complex tooling, fixtures, and high-precision components rather than repetitive production work.
  • Advanced Equipment: Operate Agie Charmilles Wire and Sinker EDMs alongside a full complement of manual and CNC machine tools.
  • Long-Term Stability: Join an established manufacturer investing in skilled trades and advanced machining capabilities.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $26+/hr starting out depending on experience with annual bonuses.
  • Medical and vision insurance, HSA, and 401k + company match
  • PTO and paid holiday leave
  • Overtime opportunities available

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Wire EDM Operation: Set up, program, and operate Agie Charmilles Wire EDM machines to manufacture complex tooling and precision components.
  • Sinker EDM Operation: Set up and operate Agie Charmilles Sinker EDMs, including electrode setup, burn optimization, and wear compensation.
  • Programming: Create, edit, and optimize Wire EDM programs using CAM software and machine controls to maximize efficiency and accuracy.
  • Precision Machining: Manufacture tooling, fixtures, production parts, and assemblies requiring tight tolerances and complex geometries.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, engineering drawings, and machining specifications to ensure parts meet print requirements.
  • Inspection: Perform in-process and final inspections using micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gages, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Manual Machining: Utilize mills, lathes, grinders, and other shop equipment to fabricate electrodes, fixtures, tooling, and support EDM operations.
  • Process Improvement: Troubleshoot machining issues, recommend manufacturing improvements, and collaborate with engineering to improve producibility.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine preventive maintenance on EDM machines, dielectric systems, filtration systems, and related equipment.
  • Safety & Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while following all company safety procedures.

Qualifications

Required

  • EDM Experience: 4+ years of Wire EDM and/or Sinker EDM machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Programming: Experience programming and operating Agie Charmilles EDM equipment or comparable Wire and Sinker EDM machines.
  • Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to read blueprints, GD&T, and engineering drawings while holding tight dimensional tolerances.
  • Inspection Skills: Proficient with precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, indicators, height gages, and other inspection tools.
  • Machining Knowledge: Experience planning setups, selecting tooling, troubleshooting machining issues, and working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work overtime, including occasional Saturdays.

Preferred

  • Technical Training: Apprenticeship, technical school, or vocational machining education.
  • Toolroom Experience: Background in tool and die, mold making, fixture building, or precision tooling.
  • Additional Equipment: Experience operating manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, jig borers, or other toolroom equipment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proven ability to optimize machining processes and recommend improvements to tooling or manufacturability.
