Job description

Position Summary:
Apave America Inc is seeking a Blade Repair Technician (Tech 2) to perform maintenance and repairs on wind turbine blades, contributing to the operational efficiency and longevity of turbine components. This role requires proficiency in composite repair techniques and a strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity. Position may require travel to job sites on an as needed basis. This position requires 100% travel.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Blade Inspections and Repairs
    • Conduct visual inspections of wind turbine blades to identify damage, wear, or other maintenance needs
    • Execute repair tasks such as sanding, filling, laminating, patching, finishing, and Leading-Edge Protection (LEP)
  • Safety and Compliance
    • Adhere to all company and industry standards, including maintaining proper PPE and following fall protection protocols
    • Conduct and assist with Job Site Analysis (JSA) and hazard assessments on-site
    • Identify and mitigate risks associated with blade repair work
  • Teamwork and Development
    • Work closely with Tech 3 leaders to ensure work is completed on schedule and meets quality standards
    • Assist in training and mentoring Tech 1 technicians on basic tasks and safety protocols
    • Act as a reliable team member, contributing to the success of the project
    • Participate in ongoing training to improve technical skills and advance in certification levels
  • Documentation and Reporting
    • Document repair work, including the use of resins, materials, and equipment
    • Provide detailed reports of inspections and repair tasks to supervisors
    • Maintain logs for personal and team certifications, equipment use, and blade condition data

Qualifications, Experience and Requirements:
  • Qualifications and Skills
    • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
    • Must be at a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in wind turbine blade repair or composite repair is required
    • IRATA and or SPRAT Rope Access certification(s) considered a strong asset
    • Proficiency in intermediate repair procedures
    • Strong background in use of suspended platforms
    • Global Wind Organization - Basic Safety Training NPFA 70 (GWO BST NPFA 70) is preferred
    • Mid-level experience with rope access techniques and working in outdoor conditions is preferred but is not required
    • Valid Driver's License and a clean driving record is required
    • Pre-access drug and alcohol testing required
    • Pre-employment MVO and Criminal background checks will be required
    • Ability and willingness to travel to job sites as needed
  • Technical Skills
    • Solid understanding of composite materials and repair techniques, including laminating, core replacement, and application of Leading-Edge Protection (LEP)
    • Competent in the use of tools and equipment for blade repairs

Work Conditions and Mental & Physical Requirements
Work Conditions:
  • Field duties require indoor and outdoor work in diverse industrial environments with varying climate conditions
  • Interaction with other crew employees, as well as supervisors, client personnel and a wide range of stakeholders
  • Working in a plant and/or shop area around production machinery with extreme noise levels
  • Work from various levels of heights and/or confined spaces for long periods of time
  • Wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection (PPE)
  • May require working from heights at 250' or greater
  • Travel to different job sites as needed, sometimes on short notice
  • May require shiftwork (days, evenings, nights)

Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to lift, move, and carry objects weighing 75lbs. or greater
  • Must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, reach, and climb
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights, including climbing tanks, ladders, scaffolding, towers, piping systems, catwalks, structural steel, and wind turbines
  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking and stooping
  • Working extended hours and standing for extended periods of time
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments in conditions of extreme heat and/or cold
  • Work in and near industrial hazards
  • Must be able to walk and climb except when performing non-field duties
  • Remain consistently active throughout shift
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing and other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively
  • Sufficient vision (close vision and distance vision) or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to investigate
