Your Opportunity
Stantec is seeking a Wildlife Biologist to join our team of environmental professionals. This position would preferably be based in our Kansas City (Overland Park), Kansas office. Our Natural Resources team spends much of the growing season in the field completing avian and wildlife surveys/monitoring, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, evaluating potential restoration sites, soil surveys, vegetation surveys, as well as office duties including, but not limited to, data analysis, reporting, restoration plans and permit application development. On a day-to-day basis, our team members also create databases and analyze field data, conduct literature research, and write environmental documents, including but not limited to: environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, biological assessments for threatened and endangered species, habitat conservation plans, permit applications and other technical reports. The team also evaluates data and creates maps using ArcGIS, coordinates with local, state, and federal agencies, and communicates with our clients. Our team works on a variety of projects while specializing in their passion and building a well-rounded base of experience. Your Key Responsibilities
  • Wildlife surveys
  • Habitat assessments
  • Environmental permit applications
  • Endangered resource record reviews
  • GPS data collection and mapping
  • Wetland and stream delineation and assessments
  • Prepare and assist with written technical reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, applications, and maps for client and regulatory agency review
  • Work will be conducted under the supervision of a project manager
  • Organize and direct field teams for a wide variety of clients and project types
  • Willingness to travel and conduct field work for extended periods, including overnight travel, is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Development of work plans, schedules and budgets for proposals
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Technical report writing including environmental review documents
  • ArcGIS-online mapping and analysis
  • Provide quality assurance/quality control of project deliverables
  • This position may require up to 60% travel for project work

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience in leading and performing field sampling techniques and using scientific equipment such as hand-held GPS units, data entry devices (tablets, iPads, etc.), soil augers, binoculars, other sampling equipment
  • Advanced technical writing skills sufficient to draft professional plans, technical reports, correspondence, permit applications, etc.
  • Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines
  • Ability to effectively communicate project status to project manager and appropriate staff
  • Ability to pass drug test, background check, physical, and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving policy
  • The ability to work independently
  • Must be an advocate for the Company's and client's health and safety programs. Stantec values employee safety as the highest priority and believes in a safety-first culture.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, alcohol screen, and baseline physical.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions as needed
  • Computer literacy, including knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and word processing, specifically Microsoft Office products
  • Experience using GIS software and ESRI ArcMap programs preferred
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and acceptable driving record

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in natural resources or environmental science (botany, biology, ecology, environmental management, natural resources, wildlife biology) or related discipline; Master's Degree preferred.
  • 5 or more years of experience required; 10 or more years of experience preferred.
  • Prior NEPA experience a plus
  • Prior consulting work-related experience conducting field surveys, data analysis, technical report and permit application writing preferred
