A WIC RN (Women, Infants, and Children Registered Nurse) is a healthcare professional who works in the WIC program to provide nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and health assessments for eligible families. They assess growth and development, offer guidance on healthy eating, and collaborate with dietitians and other healthcare providers. WIC RNs often conduct wellness screenings and ensure families receive appropriate resources to promote maternal and child health.
A WIC RN spends their day assessing the health and nutritional needs of women, infants, and children, providing education on healthy eating, breastfeeding, and child development. You will complete eligibility screenings, conduct growth and health assessments, and maintain detailed client records within WIC-specific systems. Regular collaboration with nutritionists, social workers, and community resources is expected to ensure clients receive comprehensive support. The work environment is often community-based, with a focus on preventive care, education, and advocacy for client wellbeing.
To thrive as a WIC RN (Women, Infants, and Children Registered Nurse), you need a thorough understanding of maternal and child health, nutrition education, and current RN licensure. Experience with WIC program documentation, electronic health records, and knowledge of local health resources is typically required. Strong interpersonal, cultural competence, and communication skills are essential for effectively assisting diverse clients and working within public health teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring vulnerable populations receive accurate nutrition guidance and healthcare support in community settings.
