Job description

Our Financial Lines Underwriting Team is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong analytical and sales skills to fill an Underwriting Manager opportunity on our Commercial D&O team in the Los Angeles or San Fransico markets, focusing on growing our wholesale brokerage book of business.  The manager will lead a team of wholesale dedicated underwriters and they will be responsible for individual production in order to meet the groups annual growth initiatives. 

Job Summary:

This position is a wholesale focused underwriting manager role that will contribute to the growth and profitability of our Private, Not-For-Profit, and Public Directors & Officers, Employment Practices, and Fiduciary Liability product lines through marketing, underwriting, and general product management. The manager will lead a team of wholesale dedicated underwriters and they will be responsible for individual production in order to meet the group’s annual growth initiatives.  Some risks may require special handling or unusual coverages, including manuscript policy development. The position demonstrates functional technical knowledge of relevant underwriting concepts, practices, procedures, and techniques, to include; coverage issues, multiple product lines, marketing, relevant systems, and competition in the market place. Strong CA wholesale broker relationships are required. Territory includes Western United States.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manages a team of wholesale dedicated underwriters
  • Underwrites targeted new and renewal business by reviewing and analyzing insured's (or prospective insured's) applications, financials, loss history, and all other pertinent information at the direction of the manager.
  • Reviews and negotiates policy terms and conditions.
  • Establishes and maintains strong professional and personal relationships with the regional wholesale brokerage community to facilitate growth of the Financial Lines book, with the goal of driving new business and maintaining profitable/critical renewals.
  • Makes independent marketing calls to brokers and prospective insureds.
  • Contributes to the development of marketing plans, product analysis, services, geographic focus and broker intelligence.
  • Performs related duties as requested to include, report preparation, presentations, and special projects to assist in ensuring the success of the product line unit.

Qualifications

  • BA/BS degree or equivalent experience
  • 5-10 years of underwriting or relevant experience required.
  • Strong Wholesale broker relationships in CA and other Western US states
  • Proficient in underwriting and thorough knowledge of regulatory and policy differences among states in which business is transacted.
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Proficient PC skills and capable of working multi-faceted systems.
  • Ability to effectively and independently manage work load while exhibiting good judgment.
  • Strong verbal communication and phone skills.
  • Excellent grammar and written communication skill required.
  • Must have strong relationship building skills with brokers and exemplify teamwork.

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
