Job Summary:
Wellstar Pathology is a premier service within Wellstar Health System with robust programs at Wellstar Kennestone, Cobb, North Fulton, Paulding, Spalding, Wellstar Douglas, Wellstar Windy Hill, and Wellstar Sylvan Grove Hospitals along with our Health Parks.
The System Medical Director, Pathology is a key member of the clinical executive team at Wellstar Health System, serving as the essential link between senior management, service line leaders, the medical staff, and pathologists to promote effective communication and positive working relationships. The Medical Director is responsible for identifying, contributing to and maintaining process improvements to assure optimal efficiency and regulatory compliance for the Pathology Service and will partner with System. The Medical Director is responsible for leading and participating in work to improve clinical outcomes, physician, staff, and patient satisfaction, financial performance, and growth in services across the system.
The System Medical Director, Pathology will report to the President of Wellstar Medical Group. The Medical Director will collaborate with the System Vice President of Laboratory Services with the common goal of aligning and modernizing lab and pathology services across the System.
Desired Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
  • Board Certified AP/CP Pathologist. Hematopathology specialization is a plus.
  • 8-10 years progressive physician leadership.
  • Experience working with or leading molecular laboratories a plus.
  • LIS/IT processes
  • Epic/Beaker Build Experience

Duties and Responsibilities
It is expected that the duties and responsibilities of this position will be performed in a manner that reflects the values of Wellstar Health System.
  • Participates in development of the vision, strategy, and plan to ensure an integrated lab and pathology operation throughout the Wellstar Health System.
  • Leads the development and deployment of infrastructure and processes to respond to ordering/referring provider, patient, and hospital needs, as well as taking the lead in implementation of the measurement and management tools used to enhance care delivery excellence.
  • Creates structure and processes to ensure consistency of physician services and outcomes across the practice within the Health System.
  • Serves as the main communication channel between the pathologists and the other constituents of the hospital and health system, including Wellstar Medical Group, Wellstar Community Partners, Service Line Leadership, and Hospital and Health System Leadership.
  • Leads in the development of service agreements between the pathology, lab teams and key specialty services.
  • Leads the recruitment process and onboarding for pathology providers.
  • Assists in budget development and resource allocations to include optimal staffing levels that are both cost effective and clinically safe.
  • Participates in patient care and clinical activities to maintain professional competency and credibility up to a 0.5 FTE.
  • Performs other functions as required.
