What do welders do?

Welders are skilled tradespeople who join metal parts together using high heat and specialized equipment. They work on construction sites, in manufacturing plants, shipyards, and many other settings to build or repair metal structures and products. Welders must be knowledgeable about different welding techniques, safety protocols, and the properties of various metals. Their work is essential in industries like automotive, aerospace, and infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welder, you need strong technical skills in metal fabrication, blueprint reading, and welding techniques, typically backed by a welding certification or completion of a technical program. Familiarity with tools like MIG, TIG, and arc welders, as well as safety equipment and quality inspection systems, is essential. Attention to detail, physical stamina, and effective problem-solving are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure precise, safe, and durable work that meets industry standards and project requirements.

What is a welding job?

Welding jobs are any jobs that include metal welding as a significant part of the work. There are many different fields that require welders, including manufacturing and construction. As a welder, you are trained to use a number of hand-held and automated tools to complete jobs. You use these tools to cut or fuse together metal parts. Other related positions include cutting, soldering, and brazing jobs. Other fields that have a significant welding component include ironwork and sheet metal work.

What is the difference between Welding vs Pipefitting?

AspectWeldingPipefitting
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS)Pipefitting certifications (e.g., NCCER)
Work EnvironmentFabrication shops, construction sites, manufacturingConstruction sites, industrial plants, maintenance
Job FocusJoining metal parts through weldingAssembling and installing piping systems
Tools & EquipmentWelding machines, torches, safety gearPipes, fittings, wrenches, threading tools

Welding and pipefitting share overlapping skills and certifications, often working together in construction and manufacturing. While welders focus on joining metal components through welding techniques, pipefitters specialize in installing and maintaining piping systems. Both roles require safety training and certifications, but their daily tasks and work environments differ slightly, making each role unique within the industry.

What are some common safety challenges welders face on the job, and how are these typically addressed in the workplace?

Welders regularly encounter safety challenges such as exposure to intense heat, ultraviolet light, fumes, and the risk of burns or electrical shock. Most workplaces address these risks by enforcing strict safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like helmets, gloves, and flame-resistant clothing. Additionally, employers often provide regular safety training and ensure proper ventilation systems are in place to minimize exposure to hazardous fumes. Team discussions and safety briefings are also common to keep everyone aware of best practices and recent safety updates.

Job description

About Endurance
Endurance is building the world's first modular subsea geothermal power plants, converting vast thermal resources under the ocean into gigawatts of baseload power. Backed by Founders Fund, Felicis, First Round Capital, and Point72 Ventures, our founding team includes veterans from SpaceX, Helion, Blue Origin, and Apple. We have completed multiple deep-ocean deployments to subsea volcanoes and are launching a long-term demonstration project this fall. By leveraging modular design, manufacturing scale, efficient drilling, and latent cooling on the seafloor, we are pioneering a new category of energy that outperforms traditional sources on environmental impact, deployment speed, and cost.
What you'll be doing
As a welder at Endurance Energy, you'll work alongside engineers to develop welding processes, fabricate novel heat exchanger designs, and develop repeatable manufacturing processes.
You'll gain hands-on experience with GTAW and handheld laser welding of stainless steel, nickel alloys, and titanium while helping us manufacture the world's first subsea geothermal power plant.
Additionally, you will support rapid prototyping and the first of a kind manufacturing efforts required to deliver subsea infrastructure in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
  • TIG welding of Inconel, stainless steel, and titanium
  • HHLBW (handheld laser welding) of Inconel, stainless steel, and titanium
  • Fit, tack, and weld heat exchangers that transfer 100-1000s of kW of power
  • Weld thick-walled process piping for extreme high-pressure systems
  • Collaborated with engineers on welding procedure qualification
  • Perform hands-on machining, fabrication, and modifications to support rapid prototyping and test readiness
  • Follow safety procedures in a welding and fabrication shop, ensuring shop is compliant and safe
  • Document assembly steps, test procedures, and observations for engineering review
  • Collaborate with engineers to troubleshoot fit up and welding issues
  • Maintain a clean and organized fabrication shop
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of professional experience TIG welding advanced alloys including Inconel, stainless steel, and titanium
  • Demonstrated proficiency in HHLBW (handheld laser beam welding) or willingness to train into laser processes
  • Deep understanding of weld quality standards for high-pressure, high-temperature systems
  • Experience fabricating or repairing components for marine, aerospace, or power generation systems
  • Proven ability to fit, tack, and weld complex multi-material assemblies with tight tolerances
  • Hands-on familiarity with fabrication tools, machining, and precision measurement
  • Strong understanding of weld metallurgy, joint design, and distortion control for nickel and titanium alloys
  • Comfortable reading and interpreting detailed engineering drawings and weld symbols (AWS D17.1 / ASME Section IX experience preferred)
  • Knowledge of purging techniques, filler selection, and heat input control for corrosion-resistant weldments
  • Track record maintaining a clean, organized, and safe fabrication environment
  • Commitment to safety and continuous improvement in shop practices
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, prototype-driven environment where designs evolve rapidly
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills to support engineering traceability and QA review
Preferred Skills
  • Experience welding pressure vessels or process piping for 10,000 psi systems
  • Familiarity with ASME code work or WPS/PQR development in collaboration with engineers
  • Background in aerospace, energy, or marine fabrication environments
  • Capability to perform visual and dye penetrant inspections
  • CWI or other weld inspection certifications
Compensation, Benefits, & Perks
As a pre-revenue startup, Endurance Energy offers competitive base salaries and generous equity packages for full-time employees. Final base salary will be determined by an array of factors including internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and work experience.
A key aspect of our compensation philosophy is that value creation should be aligned with rewards. Right now this means equity is a significant portion of every full-time employee's compensation. As the company matures, there will be continued evolution and changes to the total rewards and total compensation package. What will always be true is that if we win, we win together. Equity is granted to every full-time employee as a meaningful piece of ownership. We believe the people building the company should share directly in the value they create.
In addition to a competitive base salary and equity, employees will receive all of our other great benefits and perks, including:
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, and Vision insurance coverage
  • Time Away: Flexible PTO including 12 paid company holidays
  • Global Fieldwork: Travel to fascinating deployment sites along oceanic ridges in locations like the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, and the Azores
  • Hands-on Experience: Participate in sea trials and deployment operations in partnership with leading oceanographic institutions
  • Cutting-edge Development: Work with technology that spans high-power electronics, marine systems, and clean energy
  • Impactful Work: Help solve one of the world's most pressing challenges
  • Dive Certification: Company-sponsored recreational dive certification
  • Other Perks: Access to the company boat, free meals and snacks, and the list goes on!

If you're selected for consideration, a recruiter will be able to discuss in greater detail.
