Work EnvironmentOn-site welding projects, team coordinationOn-site and administrative oversight of welding teams
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, construction, shipbuildingUsed in similar industries with added managerial duties
Primary FocusHands-on welding and team guidanceSupervising welding operations and ensuring safety

The Welding Team Leader primarily focuses on hands-on welding tasks and guiding the team, while the Welding Supervisor oversees the entire welding operation, including safety and compliance. Both roles require welding certifications, but the supervisor often needs additional managerial skills. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a welding team leader?

To thrive as a Welding Team Leader, you need advanced welding expertise, supervisory experience, and often a relevant certification such as AWS Certified Welding Supervisor. Familiarity with welding equipment, safety management systems, and quality control software is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help foster team performance and ensure project deadlines are met. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining high safety standards, operational efficiency, and delivering quality welds on schedule.

How does a welding team leader balance hands-on welding work with team supervision and project management responsibilities?

As a Welding Team Leader, you'll often split your time between performing technical welding tasks and overseeing your team's workflow. Your role includes monitoring quality standards, assigning jobs based on skillsets, and ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed. While you'll still be involved in hands-on welding, a significant part of your day will be spent coordinating with other departments, troubleshooting issues, and mentoring junior welders. Strong organizational and communication skills are vital to effectively balance these responsibilities and keep projects on track.

Job description

Department: Manufacturing / Production
Reports To: VP Of Operations / Shop Floor Manager
Shift: Second Shift / Night Shift
FLSA Status: Hourly
Location: Houston, TX

Position Summary

McDaniel Metals is seeking an experienced Second Shift Welding Supervisor to oversee welding and fabrication operations during the night shift within our HVAC manufacturing environment.

This position will work closely with our established Welding Lead and team of experienced welders to ensure customer orders are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule. The Supervisor will provide overall shift leadership, coordinate production priorities and resources, address operational and personnel needs, and support the Welding Lead in maintaining efficient day-to-day workflow on the shop floor.

The Welding Lead will remain an important part of the department's technical and operational leadership. The Supervisor will complement that role by providing the additional management oversight needed to support a growing operation, including production coordination, employee development, accountability, cross-functional communication, and shift performance.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on manufacturing leader who understands welding and sheet metal fabrication and knows how to work collaboratively with experienced Leads and skilled tradespeople while providing the structure and direction necessary to meet production requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Shift Operations

  • Oversee daily second-shift welding and fabrication operations.
  • Work closely with the Welding Lead to execute production priorities and maintain an efficient workflow throughout the shift.
  • Review production schedules, work orders, and priorities to ensure customer orders are completed on time.
  • Coordinate staffing, materials, equipment, and other resources required to meet production demands.
  • Support the Welding Lead with workload distribution based on production priorities and employee skill levels.
  • Monitor work in progress and address obstacles that could impact production schedules.
  • Identify material shortages, equipment problems, quality concerns, or production bottlenecks and coordinate appropriate resolution.
  • Ensure completed work moves efficiently to the next stage of production.

Leadership & Team Support

  • Provide overall supervisory leadership for second-shift welding operations while partnering with the established Welding Lead on day-to-day floor execution.
  • Support the Welding Lead in coaching, training, and developing welders.
  • Establish and reinforce expectations for safety, quality, attendance, productivity, and workplace conduct.
  • Provide the Welding Lead with the support and resources needed to effectively direct daily welding activities.
  • Ensure new employees receive appropriate onboarding, job-specific training, and cross-training.
  • Recognize and utilize the technical knowledge and experience of Leads and senior welders when addressing production challenges.
  • Partner with Production Management and Human Resources regarding employee performance, attendance, development, and disciplinary matters when necessary.
  • Promote teamwork, mutual respect, accountability, and a positive work environment.

Welding & Technical Support

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of MIG welding, fabrication, fit-up, and sheet metal manufacturing processes.
  • Provide technical support to the Welding Lead and welding team when needed.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, work orders, and welding specifications.
  • Assist in troubleshooting welding, fabrication, and production issues.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Quality when drawings, specifications, or fabrication requirements require clarification.

Quality & Compliance

  • Partner with the Welding Lead and Quality team to ensure completed products meet drawings, specifications, and workmanship standards.
  • Monitor weld quality, fit-up, dimensions, and overall finished product condition.
  • Ensure nonconforming work is identified and corrected before advancing through production.
  • Monitor scrap and rework and address recurring issues through training, process improvement, and corrective action.
  • Ensure required production and quality documentation is completed accurately.

Safety

  • Maintain overall accountability for second-shift compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Partner with the Welding Lead to reinforce proper PPE and safe welding and fabrication practices.
  • Immediately address unsafe behaviors or conditions.
  • Ensure welding machines, grinders, fabrication equipment, and material-handling equipment are operated safely.
  • Maintain clean and organized welding areas in accordance with established housekeeping and 5S expectations.
  • Participate in incident investigations and corrective actions as required.

Shift Coordination & Communication

  • Serve as the primary management contact for second-shift welding operations.
  • Coordinate with Production, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, Planning, and Material Handling to resolve issues affecting production.
  • Communicate production status, staffing needs, equipment downtime, material shortages, and quality concerns to management.
  • Maintain an effective handoff between day and night shift operations.
  • Ensure the Welding Lead and welding team have clear priorities and the information necessary to execute scheduled work.

Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with the Welding Lead and welding team to identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and workflow.
  • Encourage employee input and utilize the experience of the welding team when developing process improvements.
  • Support standardized work, training, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend improvements to tooling, equipment, workstations, and production processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of welding, fabrication, or related manufacturing experience.
  • 3-5 years of previous supervisory or manufacturing leadership experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of MIG welding and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work orders, and welding specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead collaboratively and work effectively with established Leads and experienced production employees.
  • Strong organizational, communication, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple production priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency for production reporting, email, and documentation.
  • Ability and willingness to consistently work second shift.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising welding or fabrication operations.
  • Experience in HVAC manufacturing, curb adapter fabrication, or sheet metal manufacturing.
  • Experience working within a Supervisor → Lead → Production Employee team structure.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP or manufacturing production systems.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement practices.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk throughout the production floor for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds as required.
  • Ability to work around welding operations, machinery, noise, heat, and varying manufacturing temperatures.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE.
  • Willingness to work additional hours when required to support production demands.

Overall Expectations

The Second Shift Welding Supervisor is expected to provide the management structure and operational support necessary for the Welding Lead and welding team to be successful. The Supervisor will work collaboratively with established shop-floor leadership while maintaining accountability for second-shift safety, staffing, production performance, quality, communication, and completion of scheduled customer orders.

This position is an addition to the department's existing leadership structure and is intended to strengthen support for the welding team as production needs continue to grow.
