Job description

Magnolia River is accepting resumes for our Certified Welding Inspector position! This position is located in the Gainesville, GA area. Some travel may be required. Your job will consist of inspecting the proper construction of natural gas transmission and distribution systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the job, construction route, and be familiar with the traffic flow prior to project start.
  • As may be required by the client scope of work, walk door to door, meeting with all residential customers. Address any concerns they have before starting construction; take pictures, make detailed notes, and point out to customer any concrete or paving damage prior to starting to avoid problems later. All documentation to be uploaded into FieldLogIQ.
  • Meet with contractor to review job and discuss any concerns they may have. Obtain crew list and confirm that they are Operator Qualified (OQ) prior to commencement of work.
  • Document the progress of each project assigned daily in FieldLogIQ following the entry requirements outlined in the FieldLogIQ User Expectations Form. Client-specific systems and forms may be required.
  • In conjunction with the client representative, make field recommendations on line placement when unknown conflicts come up, confirming change in writing by email with appropriate client representative.
  • As may be required by the client scope of work, verify tie-in points are acceptable by ensuring the line being tapped meets the minimum wall thickness by observing and documenting the measurement results of the wall thickness by the welder or corrosion specialist..
  • Understand Best Management Practices including proper placement of silt fencing and hay socks.
  • Visually inspect the welds and fusions on all fittings and joints and verify adherence to all manufacturer and client procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate OQ skills.
  • As may be required by the client scope of work, observe proper jeeping of pipelines and document the voltage and results and visually inspect coating of welds, repair of anomalies and document the measurement of coating thickness.
  • As may be required by client scope of work, in conjunction with the client, determine if services need to be installed at a particular customer location. Coordinate tie-ins with construction department and service re-builds with service department.
  • Understand meter placement for relocates and move outs outlined in the client’s construction standards.
  • As may be required by the client scope of work and in a collaborative effort with the contractor, customer, and client, help resolve landscaping and/or restoration issues.
  • Confirm accuracy of contractor documentation and/or invoices to reflect specific tasks and/or linear feet of pipe installed.
  • As may be required by client scope of work, accurately complete all documentation, including, but not limited to OQ list, completion report, as–built install and retirement drawings, material list, anode cards, pressure test charts, service data, and service field orders withing the allotted time frame.
  • Understand city and county paving cut and backfill standards.
  • Verify paving and concrete repairs with contractor.
  • Communicate effectively, both written and orally.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all incidents, near misses, accidents, incidents, or injuries as outlined in the Event Reporting Guidelines. Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge/skill.
  • Assist the Inspection Manager with the training of incoming inspectors.
  • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve goals.
  • Extensive travel required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be able to read and understand construction prints.
  • Must have ability to sketch construction drawings and/or to use software for construction diagrams (as-builts).
  • Required to maintain accurate project records and documentation during construction.
  • Must adhere to safety standards and take a proactive role in reducing safety risk.
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to rapidly establish credibility and relationships with a broad range of individuals.
  • Ability to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • AWS CWI or CPWI certification is required
  • 5 years of experience in the natural gas industry is preferred (more experience may be required by specific clients).
  • Experience with visual inspection of both steel pipe welds and polyethylene pipe fusions, reading construction prints, and completing as-built drawings is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and able to operate a car or truck.
  • Hands-on construction experience is desired.

Physical Demands:

  • Duties are performed primarily in an outdoor setting with exposure to changing weather conditions.
  • Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily productive/technical nature.
  • Ambulatory across uneven surfaces of a construction excavation work zone, frequent bending at knees and waist.
  • Must be able to perform work in a very loud, active construction environment.
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with co-workers and clients. Must be able to exchange accurate information.
