What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Welding Design Software Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Welding Design Software Specialist, you need a solid background in welding engineering, design principles, and relevant educational credentials such as a degree in mechanical or welding engineering. Proficiency with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and specialized welding simulation or design software (e.g., WeldPro, Simufact Welding) is essential, and certifications in welding technology or CAD can be advantageous. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating accurate, safe, and cost-effective welding designs that meet industry standards and client requirements.

How does a professional specializing in Welding Design Software typically collaborate with engineering and fabrication teams?

Professionals working with Welding Design Software frequently act as a bridge between design engineers and fabrication teams. They ensure that digital weld designs are both manufacturable and compliant with industry standards, often participating in meetings to review design feasibility and suggest improvements. Daily tasks may include updating models based on feedback, generating detailed welding instructions, and troubleshooting design issues during production. This role requires strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset to align software-driven designs with on-the-floor fabrication processes.

What is welding design software?

Welding design software is a specialized type of computer program used by engineers, designers, and fabricators to plan, model, and analyze welded structures. This software assists in creating precise welding drawings, selecting appropriate welding methods, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. It often includes features for stress analysis, joint selection, and cost estimation, which help improve the efficiency and quality of welding projects.

What is the difference between Welding Design Software vs Welding Engineer?

AspectWelding Design SoftwareWelding Engineer
Primary RoleDesigns and simulates welding processes using specialized softwarePlans, oversees, and ensures quality of welding projects in the field or workshop
CredentialsEngineering or technical background, software proficiencyEngineering degree, certifications like CWE or AWS
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, CAD labs, computer-basedConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, workshops
Industry UsageUsed by engineers, designers, and CAD specialistsUsed by welding professionals, project managers, quality inspectors

While Welding Design Software focuses on creating and analyzing welding plans digitally, Welding Engineers apply their expertise in real-world settings to ensure welding quality and safety. Both roles are essential in the welding industry but serve different functions—one in design and simulation, the other in implementation and oversight.

Job Summary

We’re hiring a CAD Designer/Drafter to develop 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings used to manufacture custom commercial kitchen equipment and conveyor systems. This role is ideal for someone who is creative, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a collaborative, team-based environment.

What Makes This Role Different

• Design work that becomes real equipment: You’ll create 3D models and fabrication drawings for custom commercial kitchen equipment and conveyors that are built in our shop and installed in the field.

• Variety every week: This is not repetitive drafting; each project is unique, with different layouts, constraints, and customer requirements.

• Collaborative, hands-on environment: Work closely with our in-house design team and fabrication shop (sheet metal, welding, press brake) to produce shop-ready drawings that work the first time.

• Stable company with a strong reputation: Servco has been serving the St. Louis market since 1947 with a steady pipeline of institutional and commercial projects.

• Opportunity to grow your skillset: Strengthen your drafting and manufacturing knowledge while learning what makes designs efficient to fabricate and reliable to install.

Key Responsibilities

• Create 3D CAD models for custom foodservice equipment and conveyors

• Produce detailed fabrication/production drawings for manufacturing

• Ensure designs meet customer specifications, overall dimensions, and field fit/function requirements

• Design parts that can be manufactured with existing shop tooling and processes

• Support production under supervision by identifying issues and assisting with corrective actions

• Revise and maintain CAD models/drawings for future use and standardization

• Organize and maintain project files and production documentation

________________________________________

Required Qualifications

• Ability to use CAD software to read and develop technical drawings

________________________________________

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ year experience with Autodesk CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor; Revit is a plus)

• Experience or knowledge of sheet metal fabrication

• Familiarity with CNC press brake operations/functions

• Understanding of common welding methods

• Experience in manufacturing or manufacturing processes

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word)

• Relevant technical education (certificate, associate degree, or comparable coursework) may substitute for experience.

We Will Train the Right Candidate

We recognize that strong CAD fundamentals and a great attitude matter. If you’re comfortable reading technical drawings, modeling accurately, and learning fast, we’re open to training you on the rest—especially:

• Sheet metal fabrication best practices

• Shop-ready drawing standards and revision control

• Press brake and weld-process considerations

• Our internal workflow from design through production
