Job description

3rd shift hours: Sunday through Thursday, 8:00PM - 6:00AM. Overtime on Friday's when needed.

We pay double time after 45 hours worked in a week!

POSITION REPORTS TO: Shift Supervisor

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES: None

STATUS: Full-time; FLSA Non-Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE: The Fabrication Shop Helper is responsible for safely and efficiently operating fabrication and support equipment, including the CNC Plasma Table, Brake Press, Steel Cutting Saw, forklifts, overhead cranes, and other production support tools. This role also includes power washing, biofloating (applying rust inhibitors to barge cavities), and general material handling. The Fabrication Shop Helper plays a critical role in supporting production flow, maintaining equipment, and ensuring quality standards are met.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fabrication & Machine Operation

  • Set up and operate CNC-controlled fabrication equipment (Plasma Table, Brake Press, Saw).
  • Review drawings, templates, blueprints, and operating programs to determine material requirements, setup, and cutting sequences.
  • Install tooling and consumables, verify gas pressure/mixtures, and adjust machine settings to specifications.
  • Inspect and remove finished parts from equipment, ensuring compliance with quality standards and labeling as required.
  • Read and use measurement tools (tape measures, gauges, calipers) to verify tolerances and dimensions.
  • Perform routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal performance.
  • Perform welding operations as needed, including setup and execution, ensuring compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards.

Material Handling

  • Unload steel trucks safely; compare packing slips to material received to verify accuracy.
  • Inspect material for grade, thickness, and size.
  • Select and prepare steel stock for cutting based on work order instructions.
  • Operate forklifts and overhead cranes in a safe, responsible manner.
  • Organize incoming and in-process materials to maintain workflow and efficient use of space.

Saw Operations

  • Set up saw and measure/position material for specified cuts.
  • Record cutting data accurately.
  • Perform cuts in accordance with written work instructions to minimize waste and maximize productivity.

Power Washing & Biofloating

  • Conduct power washing of barges in preparation for painting and further processing.
  • Perform biofloating by applying rust inhibitors to internal cavities of barges.

Safety, Quality & Teamwork

  • Follow all safety procedures, ensuring a clean and hazard-free work environment.
  • Act responsibly to identify hazards and report potential defects or unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards?keeping tools organized, work areas clean, and equipment in good condition.
  • Support production goals by collaborating with team members, assisting other operators, and contributing to problem-solving.
  • Ensure all work meets safety, quality, and productivity objectives.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Higher vocational training preferred
  • Strong detail orientation and communication/listening skills
  • Must have good analytical and mathematical skills
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions, including blueprints and drawings
  • Able to work well in a fast-paced environment to meet team expectations
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions

PHYSICAL FACTORS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, and crouching all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items that are up to 50 pounds.
