Job description

Position Overview

DeKalb County Highway Department is seeking a Mechanic. Under the general direction of the Operations Manager or Maintenance Foreman, perform minor and major maintenance and repair of county highway gas and diesel vehicles and all specialized road equipment.

Operate a plow truck on an assigned snow plow route during snow removal season.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on gas and diesel trucks and specialized road equipment - oil changes, filter replacements, greasing, and fluid checks
  • Inspect and repair brakes (air and hydraulic), drive train, front end, engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and cooling/lubrication systems
  • Maintain all vehicle and road equipment electrical systems, including specialized highway warning lights
  • Troubleshoot roadside breakdowns and perform on-site repairs where possible
  • Perform welding (MIG and stick) and fabrication using acetylene torch; patch and repair equipment to extend service life
  • Maintain parts inventory and order supplies as needed
  • Operate a plow truck on an assigned route during snow removal season
  • Perform traffic control and assist maintenance crew operations when necessary
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma with coursework in auto/truck mechanics and gas/diesel engine repair
  • Vocational certification or completed apprenticeship preferred
  • 5 years as a general mechanic (up to 2 years of technical training may substitute).
  • Extensive knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and vehicle maintenance tools and procedures required

Requirements

  • Valid Illinois Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement
  • Allow pre-employment testing and CDL Clearinghouse inquiries
  • Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
  • Strong commitment to health and safety guidelines
  • Good communication skills and problem-solving ability
  • Physical strength and stamina to meet job demands including physical activities such as climbing, lifting, carrying, balancing, walking, stooping, digging, and applying/handling/erecting of materials
  • Ability to follow established procedures and read instructions/blueprints and wiring schematics
  • Operating knowledge of computer and diagnostic tools software
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Establish and maintain relationships with co-workers, staff and general public
  • Expected to be self-starting, show initiative and provide leadership in accomplishing work and tasks assigned with minimal supervision at times
  • May be subject to a physical exam and a background check

Schedule: Day Shift 7:00 am – 3:30 pm Monday-Friday (with overtime mandatory)
