Summary
This position serves as the Lead Security Assistant for Police Service at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) with a primary purpose to lead a team of Security Assistants responsible for monitoring physical security, equipment, and systems.

Duties:
  • Leads and guides a team of Security Assistants, assigns and balances workload, monitors progress, and ensures work quality.
  • Provides coaching, answers questions, arranges training, and handles minor personnel and workflow issues.
  • Reports team performance, training needs, and operational updates to the supervisor.
  • Monitors alarms, cameras, and access systems; analyzes alerts and dispatches appropriate personnel.
  • Manages user access permissions, maintains databases, and prepares security-related reports.
  • Issues and retrieves keys, badges, and IDs and maintains accountability logs.
  • Conducts administrative investigations of lost access items and ensures compromised access is terminated.
  • Receives and prioritizes emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Dispatches police units and maintains awareness of officer locations and status.
  • Coordinates communication with internal staff and external law-enforcement partners.
  • Operates multi-line phones, radios, computer systems, and related communications technology.
  • Performs system and equipment checks; troubleshoots issues and initiates work orders.
  • Runs NCIC queries, updates law enforcement records, and supports investigations.
  • Prepares reports, logs, vehicle registrations, and violation notices.
  • Supports special projects, data gathering, and reporting for management.
  • Coordinates warrants, transports, and welfare checks with outside agencies.
  • Completes additional tasks as assigned to support police operations and facility security.

Work Schedule: This position works a Panama schedule, consisting of 12-hour shifts (0600-1800 / 1800-0600) on a recurring 2-2-3 rotation to support 24/7 Police Service operations. Employees work two days on, two days off, then three days on, followed by two days on, two days off, and three days off. This schedule results in working every other weekend and may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required to meet operational needs.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/29/2026.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: In-depth knowledge of standard procedures in the field, requiring extended training or experience, to perform such work as adapting equipment when this requires consideration of the functioning characteristics of the equipment; interpreting situations based on experience and observations; or extracting information from various sources when this requires considering the applicability of information and the characteristics and quality of the sources. Knowledge of VA and VHA policies and procedures related to security procedures. Knowledge to execute administrative tasks that support police security related responsibilities. Knowledge to monitor and respond to physical alarm systems and security cameras to include troubleshooting basic equipment problems to dispatching Officers in response to potentially more significant issues.
