Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care Specialist
Buzzards Bay & Dennis, Massachusetts
Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists is looking for a board-certified, board-eligible, or residency-trained Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Specialist to join our collaborative emergency and specialty team.
This is an exciting time to join CCVS. We are expanding our hospital, increasing the capacity of our Emergency and Critical Care department, adding advanced imaging including MRI and fluoroscopy, and preparing to launch Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry. For a criticalist who enjoys complex medicine, teaching, collaboration, and helping shape a growing ECC service, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
What You'll Do:
Our criticalists provide advanced care for hospitalized, emergent, and critically ill patients while working closely with emergency veterinarians, specialists, interns, residents, and an experienced nursing team.
Responsibilities include:
  • ICU and ER management, emergency receiving
  • Management of complex and critically ill patients
  • Collaboration across specialty services
  • Teaching and mentorship of interns, residents, and veterinary nursing staff
  • Participation in the continued growth and development of the ECC service

For our ECC team, this means greater capacity for critically ill patients, broader specialty collaboration, and increased access to advanced diagnostics.
CCVS is home to more than 20 specialists across multiple disciplines, including Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, Anesthesiology, Exotics, and Diagnostic Imaging. Our criticalists work closely with these services to provide coordinated care for complex patients.
Education is also an important part of our culture. CCVS supports ECC and rotating internships, residency training, structured veterinary technician education, and continuing education programs. Criticalists have the opportunity to participate in rounds, mentorship, case discussion, and the clinical development of the teams around them.
Compensation & Schedule
We offer:
  • Base salary of $200,000-$250,000, based on experience and schedule
  • Participation in a pooled production bonus designed to support team-based medicine and hospital performance
  • The schedule may include day and swing shifts, ICU and ER receiving responsibilities, weekends, holidays, and on-call coverage based on department needs.
  • Four-day workweek, including one administrative day
  • Relocation assistance when applicable
  • Opportunities to work across our Buzzards Bay and Dennis locations
  • Experienced emergency, specialty, and veterinary nursing support
Qualifications
Candidates must have:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent
  • Completion of an Emergency and Critical Care residency
  • Passed NAVLE, and if necessary, PAVES or ECFVG, prior to application
  • Board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) or equivalent
  • Massachusetts veterinary licensure, or eligibility to obtain
  • DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration, or eligibility to obtain both
