Job description

Exemption Status: United States of America (Exempt) $95,717 - $132,808 - $169,898

The Software Engineer III works with a team to provide complex software programming for new software, production support, maintenance for existing software, and ad‑hoc support of key departmental initiatives that drive business functions. The incumbent receives general instructions on new projects and works autonomously to complete deliverables.

Responsibilities
  • Gain a thorough understanding of functional requirements for new software requests.
  • Work with Business Systems Analysts to clarify software requirements and translate them into working software.
  • Design, develop, and test software to meet functional requirements.
  • Practice good software engineering techniques and standards to reduce coding errors and ensure robustness and efficiency.
  • Partner with the software team in the development of engineering processes.
  • Identify and resolve technical or product problems.
  • Participate in software project meetings and provide status reports.
  • Translate technical designs into working software.
  • Maintain existing applications through enhancement and troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with team members and partners to ensure successful completion of assigned tasks.
  • Participate in code reviews and incorporate recommendations.
  • Apply software engineering and Object‑Oriented Design principles in creating UML diagrams and technical design documents.
  • Ensure component design fits within the overall solution in collaboration with the technical project lead.
  • Adopt new techniques and technologies.
  • Attend job‑related training to keep skills current and maintain an understanding of best practices.
  • Assist with mentoring and training of less experienced IT staff.
Qualifications / Experience
  • BS/BA and 6+ years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, with 2 years as a subject‑matter expert in relevant areas.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Angular and/or React.
  • Solid understanding of UI patterns and experience with Bootstrap, CSS3, HTML5, jQuery, JResponsive Web Design (RWD), JSON, and AJAX.
  • Experience writing and optimizing SQL queries and working with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle).
  • Experience developing and maintaining unit, integration, and end‑to‑end automated tests.
  • Experience leveraging AI coding tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor, etc.).
  • Knowledge of accessibility requirements and experience developing interfaces that comply with ADA/508/WCAG2.0.
  • Experience with GIT (source‑code management), Maven (build automation), Jenkins, Artifactory, SonarQube, CheckMarx.
  • Experience with Eclipse, NetBeans, or IntelliJ IDE.
  • Working experience with UNIX environments and shell scripting.
  • Experience integrating front‑end web applications with back‑end web services.
  • Solid understanding of SDLC and prior experience in Agile/Scrum teams.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, stand, walk, use hands to handle items, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, chemicals, and electrical hazards; noise level is usually moderate.
  • On‑site work required at the San Diego Headquarters; remote work is not an option.
Work Hours & Travel
  • Exempt position; work hours must accommodate job responsibilities and deadlines, including potential nights, weekends, or holidays.
  • Typical core business hours are Monday–Friday 8:00am–5:00pm.
  • No travel required, but local conferences and meetings may be attended.
