  • Department: Southview Medical Group - Cardiology

  • Schedule: Full Time Onsite; Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (no call, no weekends)

What You Will Do

The Telephone Triage Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care and clinical assessment via phone and electronic communication to patients seeking medical advice or care coordination. This role is responsible for evaluating patient symptoms, determining appropriate levels of care, providing clinical guidance based on established protocols, and ensuring timely communication and follow-up with providers and patients. The Telephone Triage RN promotes patient safety, access, and satisfaction while supporting efficient clinic operations

1. Provide nursing assessment, triage, and advice to patients via telephone or electronic communication following established clinical guidelines and protocols.

2. Assess patient symptoms to determine urgency and recommend appropriate disposition (e.g., same-day appointment, urgent care, ER, or home care).

3. Communicate with providers to relay urgent clinical information or obtain treatment orders as needed.

4. Document all patient interactions, assessments, advice given, and provider communications accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

5. Coordinate care and follow-up with clinic staff to ensure continuity and efficiency in patient care.

6. Educate patients on medication use, treatment plans, and self-care instructions within the scope of nursing practice.

7. Review incoming test results, provider messages, and refill requests; respond or route appropriately per established protocols.

8. Support patient scheduling by determining appropriate visit types and urgency.

9. Monitor and manage nurse triage calls and inboxes in accordance with established response time standards.

10. Participate in ongoing education, training, and quality assurance activities to maintain current knowledge of triage protocols and best practices.

11. Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and clinic infection control and safety policies.

12. Demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, and compassion in all patient and team interactions.

13. Maintain regular and punctual attendance. 14. Performs other duties as assigned

What You Will Need

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations

  • Active RN license in good standing with the Alabama Board of Nursing required.
  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Alabama required.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience preferred; experience in triage, primary care, family practice, or ambulatory setting preferred.
  • Experience with EHR systems and clinical documentation preferred.
