ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: Under the general supervision, the Student Assistant is responsible for assisting various tasks. This position is designed to provide opportunities to students to hone customer service skills, team development, and foster professional growth
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety): Student Assistant assignments will vary based on needs of the facility.
Grooming:
  • Will work primarily outdoors maintaining the highest standards of horse care. This task will assist Arabian Horse Center Staff by grooming and tacking horses.
  • Responsible for blanketing, bathing, clipping, and turning out horses;
  • Responsible for cleaning tack & brushes; irrigating arenas.
  • Wil provide Maintenance of work environment to include sweeping, raking, and organizing.
  • Students with qualifying experience may additionally lunge, bit lunge, and ride horses.
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing work conditions such as: working with a variety of ages of horses from newborn through senior, and working with inexperienced horses.
  • Sun exposure, high temperatures, cold weather, rain, wind, dust, pollen, and insects.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver saddles and other horse equipment.

Weekend Feeder:
  • Will work primarily outdoors feeding & watering horses, and cleaning stalls.
  • Responsible for visual inspection of horses in pasture and in stalls for health-related matters.
  • Must have the ability to identify & report horse health concerns.
  • Clean water troughs, rake barn aisles, and perform minor property maintenance.
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changing work conditions such as: working around horses of all ages from new-born to senior.
  • Will be subjected to sun exposure, high temperatures, cold weather, rain, wind, dust, pollen, insects.
  • Requires lifting and maneuvering heavy objects up to 50 pounds such as hay bales and wheelbarrows.

Farm Maintenance:
  • Will work primarily outdoors maintaining the horse facilities.
  • Regular duties to include operation of skid steer and other motorized equipment.
  • Will perform maintenance and repair of water & feed troughs, and weed abatement.
  • Will operate power & hand tools, maintain paddock & arena irrigation.
  • Wash truck & horse trailers, stack hay bales, rake, sweep, maintain barnyard cleanliness & organization, load and unload truck, and also includes all other potential farm maintenance that may arise.
  • Ability to adapt to changing outdoor conditions such as working around horses of all ages from new-born to senior, sun exposure, high temperatures, cold weather, rain, wind, dust, pollen, insects, and unstable soil conditions.
  • Candidate must be able to lift and maneuver heavy objects up to 50 pounds such as hay bales & wood pallets; and ascend/descend ladders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a willingness to learn, attention to detail, self-motivated, observant,

  • Dedicated to team work - understand the importance of teamwork to get tasks completed.
  • Driver's license - ability to obtain certification (as required) for equipment.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Experience with working with horses and/or enrolled in animal science courses.
