Job Summary and ResponsibilitiesAs our Specimen Management Coordinator, you will precisely and efficiently manage patient specimens from collection to testing. Your oversight ensures specimen integrity, accurate diagnostics, patient safety, and regulatory compliance.
Every day you will oversee specimen flow (receipt, processing, storage, dispatch) adhering to protocols. You will troubleshoot, manage supplies/documentation, train staff on handling, ensure compliance, and participate in quality improvement. You'll serve as a liaison between collection sites, labs, and clinical staff.
To be successful, you will demonstrate meticulous attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and comprehensive specimen management knowledge. Problem-solving, excellent communication, and an unwavering commitment to accuracy, safety, and compliance are essential.
- Processes samples for testing which includes distributing specimens to appropriate sections of the laboratory for analysis and preparing samples for reference laboratory testing according to departmental standards
- Transports and processes pre-surgical and surgical specimens from the OR according to departmental standards; Maintains surgery schedules and notifies Pathologist of early surgical cases requiring frozen section
- Maintains processing supplies to ensure supplies are kept fully stocked
- Performs computer entry for patient tests and updates patient information accurately and efficiently in the LIS
- Performs clerical duties which includes receiving and routing mail, answering the phone and greeting customers
- Investigates and maintains reference test result reports according to departmental standards
Please be advised that this location requires quarterly American Heart Association (AHA) Resuscitation Quality .Improvement (RQI) competency certification post-hire. This ongoing competency is required through resources internal to the facility; outside RQI competency resources are not acceptable for CommonSpirit Health compliance requirements.
