What is a weekend server?

Weekend servers are food and beverage service staff who primarily work during weekends in restaurants, cafes, or bars. Their main duties include greeting guests, taking orders, serving food and drinks, and ensuring a positive dining experience. Weekend servers are often scheduled to work during busy periods like Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays, when customer traffic is highest. These roles require strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

What does a weekend server do?

As a weekend server, your job is to serve food and drinks to each guest at your location, which is usually at a restaurant. Weekend roles are typically part-time jobs where you may act as a waiter to take each order, collect a tip after providing your services, manage the needs of each table, and fulfill any other tasks required during your shift. Some weekend servers work in other positions, such as serving food from behind a counter or traveling throughout a larger building to deliver food instead of remaining in a dining area. This job title refers exclusively to the food-oriented server position and should not be confused with weekend roles involving computer servers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend server, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Server, you need strong customer service skills, basic math abilities, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, order management tools, and sometimes food handler certifications are typically required. Excellent communication, multitasking, and a positive attitude help you stand out in this fast-paced, guest-facing role. These skills ensure efficient service, satisfied customers, and smooth restaurant operations during busy weekend shifts.

What are some common challenges weekend servers face and how can they be managed?

Weekend Servers often experience high customer volumes and fast-paced environments, especially during peak dining hours. Managing multiple tables, handling special requests, and maintaining a positive attitude under pressure are typical challenges. To succeed, it's important to stay organized, communicate effectively with kitchen staff and teammates, and prioritize tasks efficiently. Many restaurants offer training and encourage teamwork to help staff handle busy shifts and deliver excellent service.

Job description

Description:

Clairmont Place is an independent living residential community for older adults in Decatur, Georgia, located across from the VA Hospital. We are looking for people to fill part time roles as servers in our main dining room. Your primary responsibility will be customer service for our residents. Dinner shifts are from 3:00pm until 7pm Monday through Friday and 9:30a - 2p on Saturday and Sunday, but days are flexible. You must be available three to four shifts per week, including weekend availability.

Servers assemble to-go orders, do side work (rolling silverware, table set up, basic cleaning, drink station set up, etc.), wait on tables in their section through dinner service and then reset and clean their sections afterward. Residents pre-order their meals so you will have a filled out meal ticket for each resident in your section. It is fine dining with professional table service.

We appreciate and understand the needs of residents in the dining room and believe that our primary responsibility is engagement. The dining room is the heart of the community and gathering around a table together allows us to grow and thrive. Clairmont Place is a community that cares deeply for it's staff and the staff care deeply for the residents; many of our Dining Services staff have multi-decade tenures here. We work hard to maintain a culture of mutual respect, reliability, consistency and joy. Dining Services staff all work together toward a daily goal of an excellent dining experience for the residents and a supportive, rewarding work environment for ourselves.

You must be flexible, patient, have a can-do attitude, willingness to work as a team, ability to prioritize tasks and ability to remain calm and kind even under duress. You must be respectful and reliable for every shift. The right candidate does not necessarily have years of serving experience but has a friendly, professional demeanor and a willingness to learn.

This is a part time role and qualifies for part time benefits: our Employee Assistance Program, holiday bonus, and paid time off.

All employees have to pass a drug and back ground check. 3+ years of experience preferred.
