Location: Omaha, NE
Service Line: Hillcrest Hospice
Schedule: Every Saturday & Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to Midnight
Hillcrest Health Services is looking for a compassionate and clinically confident Hospice Weekend RN to join our hospice team serving the Omaha and Southwest Iowa areas.
Hillcrest Hospice provides compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals and families facing serious illness. Our team helps patients remain comfortable, supported, and surrounded by dignity while also providing guidance and reassurance to the people who care about them most.
At Hillcrest, our mission is simple: Inspiring people to live their best lives. We are looking for an experienced nurse who can provide calm, responsive, and compassionate support during evenings and weekends when patients and families need it most.
What You'll Do
As the Hospice Weekend RN, you will serve as the Primary Weekend RN responsible for coordinating and providing hospice nursing care across the Omaha and Southwest Iowa service areas every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until Midnight.
This is a full-time weekend position-not a traditional on-call role. You'll receive 40 hours of guaranteed pay each week while working two 16-hour weekend shifts (32 scheduled hours), with the additional 8 hours provided as guaranteed compensation for your weekend commitment.
You will work alongside a dedicated Weekend RN partner, collaborating throughout the day to triage patient needs, divide visits, support admissions, and ensure timely, compassionate care for hospice patients and families. Together, you will serve as the primary clinical resource for weekend patient care.
In this role you will:
โ€ข Serve as one of two Primary Weekend RNs providing hospice coverage throughout the Omaha and Southwest Iowa service areas every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. - Midnight.
โ€ข Partner with your Weekend RN teammate to prioritize patient needs, coordinate visit assignments, and provide seamless weekend coverage.
โ€ข Receive and triage incoming patient care needs, determining the appropriate clinical response and urgency of each request.
โ€ข Travel throughout the service area to complete urgent skilled nursing visits based on patient needs.
โ€ข Answer on-call requests in a timely manner while providing accurate triage and professional support to patients, families, and facility partners.
โ€ข Assess the physical, functional, nutritional, and emotional needs of assigned patients on an ongoing basis.
โ€ข Provide skilled nursing services in accordance with each patient's individualized plan of care.
โ€ข Promptly respond to changes in condition, symptom-management needs, family concerns, and urgent care situations.
โ€ข Complete initial patient and family visits as needed to explain hospice services, assess appropriateness for hospice, and support admissions.
โ€ข Initiate plans of care in collaboration with the attending physician, medical director, patient, and family.
โ€ข Provide education, guidance, and reassurance to patients and family members regarding symptoms, medications, care needs, and available hospice support.
โ€ข Participate in team conferences, service line meetings, and care coordination activities as required.
โ€ข Collaborate with hospice team members to ensure patient and family needs are prioritized and addressed.
โ€ข Maintain accurate, timely documentation and on-call logs for all calls received through the answering service.
โ€ข Submit required on-call documentation in accordance with department expectations.
โ€ข Build positive and professional relationships with patients, families, referral partners, facilities, providers, and team members.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse who is calm under pressure, clinically strong, and passionate about supporting patients and families during difficult moments.
The right candidate will be comfortable working independently, making sound clinical decisions, and providing compassionate care in home, facility, and community settings.
Ideal candidates will have:
โ€ข At least three years of nursing experience.
โ€ข Hospice, home health, palliative care, emergency, or acute-care experience preferred.
โ€ข Strong assessment, triage, symptom-management, and clinical decision-making skills.
โ€ข Ability to manage changing priorities and urgent situations with professionalism and compassion.
โ€ข Strong communication skills with patients, families, providers, facilities, and interdisciplinary team members.
โ€ข A calm, flexible, and supportive approach during emotionally challenging situations.
โ€ข Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation.
โ€ข Comfort using clinical technology, electronic documentation systems, and available resources efficiently.
Education & Credentials
  • Active Registered Nurse license in Nebraska or a compact state required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
