Position: Environmental Engineer I – Water Resources

Location: 600 18th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203
Duration: 1 Year

Work Location & Schedule

  • Based in Birmingham, Alabama
  • Hybrid work model (office + remote)
  • Participation in remote support beyond normal business hours during flood events and real-time system operations
  • Weekend or extended-hour availability required during critical weather events

Position Overview

The Environmental Engineer I will serve as a Water Resources Engineer supporting Southern Company’s hydro reservoir management organization. This role contributes to the implementation of watershed water control plans including operational forecasting, flood control, and drought management across multiple hydro-generating watersheds.

The position supports hydrologic modeling, real-time monitoring systems, computer model development, and operation of the Hydro Optimization Management System (HOMS).

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer seeking hands-on experience in hydro operations, watershed modeling, and real-time water resource system management.

Primary Responsibilities

Water Resource Management

  • Support hydro operations forecasting
  • Assist with flood control and drought management strategies
  • Contribute to implementation of watershed water control plans

Modeling & Analysis

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
  • Support watershed modeling and river analysis
  • Assist with computer model development and configuration
  • Utilize river analysis software for operational planning

Systems & Technology Support

  • Support gaging systems including rain, stage, and temperature sensors
  • Assist with real-time instrumentation network oversight
  • Support data collection and dissemination systems
  • Assist with operation and maintenance of HOMS (Hydro Optimization Management System)
  • Perform programming and scripting to enhance internal software tools

Operational Support

  • Participate in real-time system support during weather events
  • Provide technical updates during operational forecasting cycles

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (required)

Foundational Knowledge

Basic understanding of:

  • Water resource management principles
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
  • Watershed modeling
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Computer model development
  • Programming or scripting languages

Familiarity With

  • Gaging systems and hydrologic instrumentation
  • Data collection, analysis, and reporting
