Reservoir Engineer (A&D), Associate - Investment Banking, Houston, GBM Private, Classic
Team Overview
The Natural Resources Group is a global team with bankers around the world. The group has a significant presence with offices in New York, Houston, Toronto, Calgary, London, Hong Kong and Buenos Aires, among others. The group covers Metals & Mining, Chemicals, Power & Utilities, and Energy (including Alternative/Renewable Energy, Upstream, Midstream, Downstream, & Oilfield Services).
Position Summary
The Reservoir Engineer will be a key member of Goldman Sachs A&D (Acquisitions & Divestitures) team and work closely with the firm's technical and corporate finance team. This position will provide advanced engineering technical support for the A&D team and requires strong proficiency in reservoir engineering practices, geological understanding of the major North American basins (US Lower 48, Canada, etc.) and economic principles to provide services for a variety of clients within the energy sector.
Key roles and responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Providing technical diligence support and inputs for modeling efforts related to upstream, midstream, OFS mergers, acquisitions, divestments, and capital market transactions
  • Identification and understanding of key engineering & geological drivers for well performance, PDP forecasting, type curve development, LOS reviews, well spacing patterns, and base / upside zones & inventory
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze key well design & completion trends at both the operator and basin level using both public & private data
  • Performing technical reviews on assets across various basins in North America (e.g. Permian, Eagle Ford, Bakken, DJ, Scoop/Stack, Haynesville, Appalachia, GoA, Montney, Duvernay, etc.)
  • Determination of key technical and financial assumptions for upstream & midstream assets to drive valuation and economic modeling
  • Ability to build, run, sensitize, and maintain economic databases (e.g. Aries, PHDwin, ComboCurve, etc.) containing detailed technical information
  • Preparing both internal and external technical materials to be used for pitch books, mandates, and Confidential Information Memorandums / data room presentations
  • Contribution and participation in both internal and external presentations

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Petroleum or Chemical Engineering (or other relevant technical discipline)
  • 3+ years of investment banking A&D / Technical experience; OR 5+ years of technical experience in Reservoir Engineering at an Oil & Gas Operator
  • Operations / Production / Business Development experience at an Operator is a plus
  • Masters or advanced degree in Engineering or MBA a plus, but not essential
  • Technical knowledge and expertise across major North American basins and emerging plays within the oil and gas industry
  • High level of discretion dealing with confidential matters
  • Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to set priorities
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • History of outstanding academic and professional achievement
  • Software Skills: Aries, PHDwin, ComboCurve, Value Navigator, Spotfire, Enverus (PRISM), Wood Mackenzie, Microsoft Office
