What is a weekend project manager?

Weekend Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects and coordinate teams specifically during weekends. Their responsibilities typically include planning, executing, and closing projects, ensuring deadlines are met, and managing any issues that arise outside of regular weekday hours. This role is important for organizations that operate or require project progress over the weekend, such as event planning, construction, IT maintenance, or retail. Weekend Project Managers use the same project management skills as their weekday counterparts but must also be adaptable to unique weekend challenges, such as limited resources or fewer team members on-site.

What does a weekend project manager do?

A weekend project manager oversees projects that continue production over the weekend. Some weekend project manager positions only require you to work on Saturdays and Sundays, while others include a weekend shift within their full-time schedule. A project manager can work on process improvement, business, tech, or development projects. Specific job duties vary, depending on the industry and company, but general responsibilities include overseeing operations during the project lifecycle. You create a budget, negotiate contracts with vendors, schedule employees, develop benchmarks, troubleshoot problems when they arise, and ensure that the finished project meets expected standards by the required deadline. During the duration of the project, you report progress to company managers or stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, time management, and relevant experience or a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Trello, or Asana, and certifications like PMP or CAPM are highly valued. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you effectively coordinate teams and resolve issues on tight weekend timelines. These abilities are crucial to ensure projects stay on track and meet objectives despite condensed work periods.

How does the work schedule and team collaboration differ for a weekend project manager compared to traditional weekday project management roles?

As a Weekend Project Manager, you'll typically oversee projects that require leadership and coordination outside standard business hours, such as during weekends or holidays. This often means working with teams on staggered or rotating schedules, coordinating handoffs with weekday managers, and ensuring clear communication across all shifts. You'll need to quickly address issues that arise when other departments may have limited availability. Proactive planning and strong documentation skills are essential to maintain project momentum and align all stakeholders.

Job description

Project Manager – Calgary

Lead. Deliver. Build.

PTW is looking for an experienced Project Manager to join our Calgary team and take ownership of industrial construction and fabrication projects from initial planning through successful completion.

This is an opportunity for a technically minded Project Manager who enjoys being hands-on, making decisions, working directly with clients, and seeing a project come together from start to finish.

You'll be a key player in the success of each project — leading execution strategy, managing budgets and schedules, identifying risks, supporting estimating, working closely with field teams, and building strong client relationships along the way.

What You'll Do
  • Take ownership of projects from conception through completion, ensuring scope, schedule, cost and execution plans are clearly defined.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, building strong relationships and ensuring expectations are met.

  • Develop and implement project execution strategies and functional plans.

  • Manage project schedules, budgets, changes and overall project performance.

  • Identify project risks early and develop practical mitigation strategies.

  • Independently estimate smaller projects from start to finish, while supporting larger project proposals and estimating activities.

  • Partner with Estimating to ensure a smooth handoff from proposal to execution.

  • Review bid documents, drawings, specifications and take-offs to identify scope gaps, omissions, discrepancies or opportunities before they become issues.

  • Lead project kick-off meetings and ensure field teams have the information, resources and expectations required to execute successfully.

  • Work closely with foremen and crews to support productivity, performance and project objectives.

  • Lead and support change management, escalating concerns and opportunities when required.

  • Work with clients to obtain approval for progress billings and ensure invoicing is completed in accordance with contract requirements.

  • Drive project close-out, including customer sign-off, demobilization and lessons learned.

  • Partner with Business Development and Estimating to capture client feedback and continuously improve future projects.

What You Bring
  • Previous Project Management experience in industrial construction, maintenance, fabrication or a related environment.

  • A strong technical understanding of construction processes, drawings, specifications and project execution.

  • Experience developing cost estimates, material take-offs and project plans.

  • Strong understanding of project scheduling, risk management and change management.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation and client relationship skills.

  • The confidence to work independently, make decisions and take ownership of project outcomes.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project scheduling software.

  • A willingness to regularly travel to the field and stay connected with project execution.

Why PTW?

At PTW, you're not just managing a spreadsheet — you're leading projects, influencing outcomes and working directly with the people who make the work happen.

You'll have the opportunity to work on challenging industrial projects, build strong client relationships, collaborate with experienced field teams and grow your career with an established organization.

What we offer:

  • Competitive compensation

  • Comprehensive benefits package

  • Employer matching retirement plan

  • Career advancement opportunities

  • A collaborative, experienced team

  • The opportunity to take real ownership of projects and make an impact

If you're a Project Manager who thrives on ownership, problem-solving and delivering results, we want to hear from you.
