Under the general guidance and direction of the CSPD Supervisor and CSPD Manager, the Sterile Processing Technician 3 utilizes advanced, certified-level skills to perform Sterile Processing functions as assigned. This role requires independent proficiency in all core responsibilities and includes oversight of shift trainees in real time. The Technician III serves as a preceptor, supporting Sterile Processing Technicians 1 and 2 in developing the skills necessary to perform all primary functions independently.
Primary responsibilities include receiving instrumentation, sorting and decontaminating procedural items and instruments, inspecting and assembling instrument sets, determining appropriate sterilization methods and cycle selection, maintaining accurate documentation of all sterilization processes, Participation in a rotating weekend on-call schedule, and ensuring precise inventory assignment related to case-picking activities. The position requires maintaining active certification through a recognized national certifying body (CBSPD or HSPA/IAHCSMM) in accordance with their requirements.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Decontaminates surgical instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions or advised by CSPD Manager or Director.  Will operate all decontamination equipment including washer disinfections, ultrasonic cleaners, cart washer and washer automation.
  • Inspect instruments after decontamination ensuring all items are clean, intact, functional, and accounted for.
  • Assembles trays in a manner that ensures device sterility as well as presenting a tray that is easy for the end user to access for use.  Uses count sheets to ensure trays are assembled accurately for all trays.
  • Proficient in interfacing with departmental tracking systems for all processing functions.
  • Assembles, packages or containerizes instrument sets in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and established standards.
  • Loads sterilizer carts to ensure packaged items remain intact and uncompromised, arranging containers and wrapped goods according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Performs daily sterilizer testing and monitors records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Operates sterilizers in accordance with manufacturer instructions, ensuring biological monitoring is completed for every load.
  • Documents all load contents, enters load data into the tracking system, verifies correct cycle parameters, monitors sterilizer activity, and records all pertinent information.
  • Unloads sterilizers while ensuring items remain uncompromised and stores them in designated locations according to the instrument label, and updates by scanning into the tracking system.
  • Picks scheduled cases according to preference cards and review of surgical schedule.
  • Provides support for daily operations and ensures departmental coverage, demonstrating proficiency across all job functions.
  • Reports to the shift supervisor and assists with departmental priorities and project work.
  • Coordinates coverage when the supervisor requests time off to ensure continuity of leadership coverage.
  • Participation in a rotating weekend on-call schedule, adheres to NEBH on-call policies, and responds promptly and reliably when paged for add-on procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CRCST or CSPDT Certification via HSPA or CBSPD is required 
  • CIS Issued by HSPA preferred 
  • Proficient Knowledge of surgical instruments and specialty surgical instruments is required 
  • Basic computer skills and aptitude for electronics helpful for trouble shooting is required 
  • Collaborates effectively with team members to achieve shared goals and support overall team performance.

EDUCATION:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent is required.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

  • 2-4 years of work experience is required.

Pay Range:

$27.30 - $40.57

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.  Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
