Summary of Function
The District School Librarian is responsible for managing and overseeing the library services in Apache County's schools. The essential duties include developing library resources, supporting students and staff in their educational objectives, promoting literacy, and fostering an environment conducive to learning. The librarian will collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, ensure the availability of diverse resources, and facilitate access to technology.
Qualifications include:
  • Preferred Master's degree in library science (MLS) or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • - Valid Arizona State Library Media Specialist Certificate or the ability to acquire certification.
  • - Previous experience as a school librarian or in a similar educational setting preferred.
  • - Strong understanding of library automation systems, digital resources, and educational technology.
  • - Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card - required.
  • Two years' experience working with youth and adults in an organized setting with experience as a school librarian or in a similar educational setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of library automation systems, digital resources, and educational technology.
  • Valid First Aid or CPR Certification - required.
  • Bilingual - preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1.Library Management:
  • Oversee the operations of school libraries within the district, including budgeting, inventory management, and the acquisition of new materials.
  • Regularly assess and evaluate library collections for relevance, quality, and diversity.

2. Instructional Support:
  • Collaborate with educators to design and implement information literacy programs and research skills instruction.
  • Develop and conduct workshops and training sessions for teachers and students to enhance information-seeking and critical-thinking skills.

3. Student Engagement:
  • Promote a love of reading and learning through book clubs, reading programs, and special

events.
  • Provide individualized support to students in navigating library resources and technology.

4. Resource Development
  • Curate and develop library materials, including books, e-resources, and multimedia, which support the curriculum and reflect community needs.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and digital resources to enhance the library's offerings.

5. Collaboration and Community Involvement:
  • Foster partnerships with local libraries, community organizations, and stakeholders to enhance resource availability.
  • Engage with parents and the community to promote library services and encourage lifelong learning.

6. Professional Development:
  • Maintain a commitment to professional growth through ongoing education, conferences, and training opportunities in library sciences and education trends.
  • Serve as a mentor and resource for school library staff across the district.

7. Performs other duties as assigned.
Working conditions
  • Primarily based in school libraries in the district; it may require travel to different school sites within the district.
  • May involve occasional evening and weekend events for special programs and trainings.

Physical requirements
Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement is required to perform aspects of the job. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves sitting and moving for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, bending, holding and grasping objects. Verbal communication ability required.
