Position Summary
The Police Dispatcher is responsible for receiving, assessing and documenting emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatching UIW police and security officers with respective pertinent information as appropriate to any campus or University location upon request. The Police Dispatcher reports to the University Police Lieutenant.
Note that this position requires the ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment, as required by TCOLE standards.

Description of Job Duties
Perform a full range of radio and telephone operational duties in this 24-hour operations center which serves as the primary nerve center of UIW, including but not limited to:
  1. Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from staff, faculty, students and general public requesting service.
  2. Prioritize incoming calls, obtain detailed information while maintaining composure,and push out the necessary information to appropriate individuals, as appropriate, in a timely manner.
  3. Provide service, information and directions to the campus community and visitors for non-emergency calls for all campus police operations.
  4. Enter and maintain accurate daily activity logs to include a variety of communication equipment, including radio console, telephone, fire alarm monitoring systems and other related computer systems to include Report Exec.
  5. Ensure compliance with all UIW Police Department policies and guidelines.
  6. Check on criminal records and backgrounds using the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System. Enter stolen vehicle and other information as required into the database.
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Effective oral communication skills via phone and radio systems.; clear concise speaking voice and the ability to type 25 wpm.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize incoming calls and relay necessary information to appropriate individuals in a timely manner.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure during high stress situations and obtain detailed information and disseminate appropriately.
  • Must exercise good judgment in providing for the safety and welfare of UIW students, employees, visitors and property.
  • Must abide by attendance standards as this is a critical 24 hour operations center.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education
Graduation from High School or GED equivalent.
Required Work Experience
Six (6) months of experience in a position that required public contact, dispatching or related duties.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some College.
  • One year of job-related experience to include experience with radio communications and computers.

Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
  • Must have a valid driver's license or state ID, as required by TCOLE licensure.
  • Ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment, as required by TCOLE standards.
  • Willingness and ability to secure Telecommunicator License by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (which requires US citizenship) within one year from date of assignment.

Work Hours
  • Rotating shifts required, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and special events, as operational needs dictate.
  • Current shifts include:
    • 6am to 2pm
    • 2pm to 10pm
    • 10pm to 6am.

Physical Demands
  • Long hours of working in isolation.
  • Must have good hearing to be attentive and secure accurate information and relay as appropriate.
  • Good hand dexterity to be able to use phones, police radio systems, and internal radio systems for communication.
