PRN Pharmacist

With the opening of Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center/HCPC at UTHealth Houston, we will soon have the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the country, serving the region with a 500+ bed facility. Our dedicated health care employees will have the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of mental health specialties and cutting-edge research. With exposure to a variety of specialties such as Acute, Subacute, and Intensive Outpatient, Continuum of Care, Mood Disorders, ECT, Early Onset Treatment, Adult General Psychiatry, Competency Restoration, Child and Adolescent, Juvenile Justice, Geriatric Psychiatry, Treatment Mall and Unit-Based Programming.

We are seeking a PRN Pharmacist with availability for night and weekend shifts at HCPC. A shift differential is provided for both nights and weekends.

Shift Options:

  • Weekend: 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Night: 12:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Preferred Commitment:

  • 2 to 4 shifts per month

Position Summary:

This clinical staff pharmacist evaluates and interprets orders; compounds; and dispenses medications according to written orders/prescriptions issued by an authorized prescriber. Identify, prevent, assess, and resolve medication-related problems to ensure a safe and optimal patient outcome. Promote clinically rational drug therapy and sound pharmaceutical care through criteria based protocols.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Evaluates, interprets, compounds, and dispenses medications and other pharmaceutical supplies according to written orders/prescriptions issued by an authorized prescriber. Evaluates and clarifies medication orders or prescriptions with prescribers.
  • Identifies, strives to prevent, assesses, and resolves medication related problems to ensure a safe patient outcome.
  • Promotes safe, efficacious, and cost-effective medication therapy by participating in the provision and documentation of clinical pharmacy services and execution of medication utilization initiatives (e.g., IV to PO conversion program, renal dosing).
  • Maintains professional competencies to meet current and future needs of the patients and customers.
  • Oversees technicians in accordance with department policies and procedures. Ensures all patient care provided meets or exceeds all regulations, statutes, and JCAHO standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to effectively participate on an interdisciplinary team or committee.
  • Knowledge of pathophysiology, interpretation of diagnostic criteria, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing pharmacy services.
  • Proficient in the use and application of new medications and technology.
  • Registered Pharmacist (RPh) by Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) required

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree of Science or Pharm.D. from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required

Minimum Experience:

1 year experience as a pharmacist required Clinical pharmacy experience preferred Experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems required

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This position is a security-sensitive position pursuant to Texas Education Code §51.215 and Texas Government Code §411.094. To the extent that a position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Texas Business and Commerce Code §117.001(2), the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired for and to continue to be employed in that position. Personnel in such positions, and similarly situated state contractors, will be routinely reviewed to determine whether things such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the applicant, employee, or contractor from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure. A foreign adversary is a nation listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
