JOB SUMMARY
The Parks/Athletic Fields Worker supports the City's parks and recreation mission by operating light and medium equipment to maintain, repair, and enhance athletic fields, parks, and related facilities. The role ensures safe, high-quality public spaces through hands-on grounds and facility maintenance, construction, and renovation work. It also plays a key part in preparing parks for special events and community use, contributing directly to a positive resident experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following list highlights the main responsibilities of this position. While it covers the core tasks, it may not include every duty that could be assigned. Employees may be asked to take on other responsibilities as needed to support the team and department.
  • Maintains safe, high-quality parks and athletic fields by performing routine grounds and facility upkeep, including turf care, cleaning, and debris removal.
  • Operates light and medium equipment, vehicles, and power tools to support maintenance, construction, and repair activities across parks and recreation facilities.
  • Supports the preparation, maintenance, and enhancement of athletic fields, including participating in fertilization programs and the safe application of pesticides and herbicides.
  • Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation and basic plumbing systems to ensure reliable facility operations.
  • Contributes to special projects, event preparation, and other assigned duties to support overall parks and recreation operations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of parks/grounds maintenance and/or other related experience (construction or repair).
  • Three (3) years of experience operating light to medium equipment.
  • Valid Texas Driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Athletic field maintenance is desired.
  • Class B CDL is preferred

COMPETENCIES AND ENVIRONMENT
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of how to read, understand, and follow maintenance documentation, repair manuals, and related technical instructions.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication to maintain effective, positive working relationships with staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, exercise sound judgment, and complete assigned tasks efficiently and safely.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds frequently. Subject to standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, bending, twisting, balancing, vision, hearing, talking and foot controls frequently; fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching and climbing occasionally; sitting and crawling rarely.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Working conditions involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, machinery with moving parts, hazardous materials/ chemicals, and infectious diseases is involved; utilizes personal protective equipment as necessary.
