Job description

Job Summary:
The Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Registered Nurse (MS/Tele RN) is responsible for delivering high-quality nursing care to patients in a complex, high-volume unit. This role requires managing telemetry monitoring, patient assessment, and specialized care including pacemaker and tracheostomy management. The nurse will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, respond to rapid changes in patient status, and ensure adherence to protocols and isolation precautions. An active New York RN license, BLS and NIHSS certifications, and EPIC charting experience are required. The position involves a 13-week contract with 4x12 hour day shifts and floating to other units as needed.
Responsibilities:
  • Manage a patient ratio of approximately 1:6, with flexibility between 1:5 to 1:7.
  • Serve as charge nurse and coordinate unit activities.
  • Perform telemetry monitoring and manage telemetry patients.
  • Provide care for patients with pacemakers (temporary and permanent).
  • Manage feeding tubes and administer blood products safely.
  • Care for central lines and PICC lines, including phlebotomy and IV starts.
  • Follow heparin protocols and manage surgical drains.
  • Provide care for ortho trauma and total joint replacement patients.
  • Utilize oxygen delivery devices including high flow nasal cannula, nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, and portable oxygen tanks.
  • Manage tracheostomy care and implement isolation precautions.
  • Perform wound care and operate wound vac devices.
  • Participate in rapid response and code team activities as required.
  • Document patient care accurately using EPIC charting system.
  • Float to other units as assigned to support patient care needs.
Required Skills & Certifications:
  • Active New York Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system.
  • Minimum experience managing patient ratios of 1:6 and charge nurse experience.
  • Clinical skills in telemetry monitoring, pacemaker care, feeding tube management, blood product administration, central line and PICC line care, phlebotomy, IV starts, and wound care.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
  • Experience with ortho trauma and total joint replacement care.
  • Familiarity with surgical drain management and high flow oxygen devices.
  • Previous experience in rapid response and code team participation.
Special Considerations:
  • Must be willing to float to other units as needed.
  • Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 75 miles away from the facility.
  • Work involves complex patient care requiring strong clinical judgment and multitasking.
  • Strict adherence to isolation precautions and infection control protocols.
Scheduling:
  • 13-week contract with possible extension.
  • Four 12-hour day shifts per week, from 07:00 to 19:00.
  • Every other weekend work required.
